Smart album image count
Hi everyone
I'm sorry if this is has been addressed before but a search of the forums didn't help. I recently migrated from LR and I use the catalog system in CO and have gotten quite used to it except for one thing. I would really like to see the number of images populated in my smart albums next to the album name, as is the case with normal albums. Is this possible? The albums are working correctly, images based on the criteria are automatically added but no image count. Thanks
Gunnar

I think that this has been asked before, and that the answer is no, for some technical reason that I can't remember.

Thanks Ian
It seems odd though, that there should be problem with implementing this. Smart collections in other programs are very capable of summing up and displaying how many images match the given criteria. Anyone else know why this is not so in CO ?

C1 does it as well but, as it is an interactive real time calculation rather than a value stored in the database it fits better with the concept of a "filter" and so the numbers are displayed as part of that activity.
The header row for the Browser for example.
If you only have one Smart Album the processing required to obtain start point for numbers for the album is the same no matter how one chooses to display it. It will be performed if the Smart Album is selected.
However if one has several Smart Albums then the numbers for each of them would need to be calculated (or checked if a "last known good value" was stored in the catalogue database) cheating quite a significant processing overhead during catalogue or session opening procedures.A pointless, especially in a catalogue situation where there may be many more files than a session most of them having less relevance to day to day usage compared to session based activities.
So I think the answer may be related to the unnecessary (for most people most of the time) overhead of working the system to update numbers that are not of immediate interest and may not be of any interest at all in many circumstances.
I have no idea what other systems do. Perhaps store a number of instant display and then check it via a background process? Or when activated as an album as C1 does it?
I suspect there are some other considerations as well but is you need to know the detail behind design decisions in depth you may need to ask Phase via a Support Case to see if they are prepared to divulge the information.
HTH.
