Optimal Preview Image size for 5k iMac
So I am running on a new 5k 27" iMac now and I notice a lag when arrowing down through the browser from image to image. C1 seems to be rebuilding the image preview every time I go to the next image. The lag is maybe 1/2 second but I'm not sure why I have this lag at all. The files are on an external RAID drive (catalog is on internal SSD) and I also see the drive lights flicker every time I arrow down, which indicates to me that C1 is going back to the referenced RAW image file and reading it every time I down-arrow.
So I think I have the "preview Image size" set too small for the new higher resolution iMac screen. Is there a recommended rule-of-thumb preview size on a 5k iMac? (I'll experiment but am wondering what other's experience may have been).....

It needs to be large enough to fit the space on your screen that it will occupy without the app having to refer to the original raw file to render the image for you. So if the preview image size in preference is set to 2560 (as mine is - not having a 5k iMac) then it won't be big enough. I'm on a MacBook Pro Retina with a 2560x1600 display. If your iMac is 5120x2880 I'd suggest you need to select previews of 5120. (Of course (a) they will take up more disc space, and (b) the first time the app regenerates them it will take a little while.)

I just went through the same exercise. With the toolbar open on the left and the browser open on the right, and the two columns sized such that the image fills the height, the maximum width I saw was 3724px. Therefore, I used the 3840 setting and it seems to work well. 0 -

Whether that is optimal partly depends on whether you always work with both the tools and the browser visible. I generally work with the tools visible but not the browser, so as to see the image bigger.

I've discussed this quite manicly and extensively without much gained insight, through several threads.
So far it seems to be a preview engine behaviour (issue). It happens on both Mac and Windows. Fast machines. Slow machines. Fast SSD's. Etc.
It is NOT a direct consequence of the preview size, but the window size seems to have direct impact on how long you'll have to wait for that preview to load on your particular system.
So here is a potential question: Is your display scaled (apple default) or at the max 5k resolution?0 -
I was running the Apple's default and will try some alternatives resolutions.
I recently increased the preview size and also upgraded to 10.2 and it has improved about 50% but I'm not sure which change helped. I will experiment a bit more.0 -
I have late 2015 mac 27†i disabled opencl and any xmp sync .. that helped.. even the local adj brush is nicely smooth 0 -
Today I launched Capture One 10 with the express purpose of rating my pics. The goal was to quickly step thru each pic and give it a number rating. Things quickly came to a halt as it took from one to two seconds for each picture to paint on the screen.
The particulars of my setup are:
Computer:
Apple iMac, 5K, 27 inch, Late 2015
3.4 Ghz i5, 32 GB RAM
macOS Sierra 10.12.6
Software:
Capture One 10.2
Single Catalog; approx 22k images
Cache Preview Image Size = 5120k
The catalog is stored on an internal SSD drive. The photos are stored on an external SATA disk connected via Thunderbolt.
My cache size was originally less than 5120 but after doing some reading I upped it to 5120 and Regenerated Previews. This made no difference. It's still taking one to two seconds to paint an image on the screen. I also tried it with OpenCL both on and off. This also didn't make any difference.
What am I missing? What should I try next? One to two seconds to view each picture is too long when rating a collection with two or three thousand pictures in it.
Thanks.0 -
for image rating and culling, there are far more better choices imo..
i use Fas...iewer for 19$ which is displaying 24mp raws instantly....and making culling and rating superior fast...0 -
Thanks for your reply but I'm looking for a way to do it all within CaptureOne. 0 -
Modellname: iMac (Retina 5K, 27'', ultimo 2014)
Prozessortyp: Intel Core i5
Prozessorgeschwindigkeit: 3,5 GHz
Anzahl der Prozessoren: 1
Gesamtanzahl der Kerne: 4
L2-Cache (pro Kern): 256 KB
L3-Cache: 6 MB
Speicher: 24 GB
OSX 10.13 High Sierra
1TB Fusion Drive but also tried it with external Intel ssd on USB3.0.
C1 10.2
5120px image size with native resolution
I compared C1 with On1 Photo Raw and its performance is very poor.
After browsing through some images, it gets slower and slower. Large tif-Files sometimes take 30-40s to load. Drawing masks are so laggy ☹️
I tried all the tipps here in this thread - only switching to fullscreen seems to be a bit faster but also hangs sometimes for several seconds. I am realy disapointed of the slow performance.
I hope, that C1 will improve it till they are reaching Lightroom niveau!!!0 -
I'm running a late 2015 27" 5K iMac with AMD Radeon R9 M390 2048 MB. 24GB of RAM, 1TB Fusion main drive and external 512 GB Samsung SSD for photograghy.
OSX 10.12.6 No antivrus. Dual Monitor, right now only using the main monitor for COP.
I have about a 15K COP catalog with a variety of image sources, about half are Pansonic RAW and Panasonic JPEG about 16MP. Also Oly M43, Sony A7 a few Nikon DSLR, and whole lot of point and shoot of various desscription.
The catalog and the images are on an external SSD connected via USB3.0 (COP loads the image as well as the preview on opening)
After installing COP 10.2, I removed all COP .plist files from ~/Library/Preferences, and then let COP rebuild.
Open CL for display and processing are set to "auto" (results in a speed increase for some operations)
Auto Sync Suidecar XMP is set to "none" (this would cause COP to search for and read a sidecar XMP on opening an image)
Capture providers are all disabled (I don't use tethered capture)
My preview size is set to 2560.
The "Filters" tool is removed from the Library tab, and is on it's own tab (When visible, the Filters tool has to update ALL the Metadata from ALL the images in the current folder before starting many actions. Massive slow down for some types of Metadata)
I've also got rid of all videos, all unsupported image types, all multilayer TIFFs and all images with any dimension less than 512pixels. Not sure if any of those have made a difference or not.
I find that after cllicking on an image in the browser it's about 0.5 a second before thee image is finished painting.0 -
I've got an iMac 4K 27" Late 2014 32GB AMD M295X 4GB 512GB SSD, and for the most part, it runs fine, though I have noticed C1 runs noticeably faster on the Bootcamp install of Windows 10 on the same iMac, something I would definitely try out if you have some free time one day. 0 -

Well, my sarcasm infringed on the rules number 2, number 4, and might have touched on number 10.
Hmm, maybe this one touches number 10.0
