Orange band around a picture...that I can't deselect

I obviously hit a wrong key. But now this one photo stays selected, and when I select another the two appear and the first one stay no matter what. How do I deselect the first one? Is it a comparison thing?

  Yes it is.
  Click right button on your mouse once the image is selected, then select "unset as compare variant".

  You can also use the keyboard shortcut command+return (return alone sets the compare variant)
