Serious bug in the "Locate" feature can damage a catalog
Using Capture One Pro 8.3.4 under Windows 8.1 Pro, I will create a support case but want to link it here and inform other users in the forum. Thus this thread.
Introduction:
I am organizing my files and folder on my disk with the Windows Explorer, and do NOT want an other software to enforce me to follow its structure.
That's why I never user the proper import and export features of CO with a file copy.
I actually started using CO many years ago with CO 4, because the settings files were relative in a subfolder.
Since I followed the Express path, I had to move on from Session to Catalog, I just upgraded to Pro lately with 7 and now 8.
Thus, I now mainly use the catalog with absolute path to my picture.
That's how I am using CO:
1) copy my RAW pictures from my SD card to a folder on my HDD.
2) work on the metadata with external software (GPS sync, etc).
3) convert my RAW with CO
I am using CO as following.
1) in the Library/Folder structure, I am adding folder one by one.
2) right clic on the folder I want to work on, synchronize folder, import images. I am NOT using ImportFrom/ImportTo, letting the "store files" to "current location". I usually filter "*** and higher" picture, and "auto adjust" the RAW file during import
3) work on my pictures
4) process them to JPG mostly.
Why I have an issue?
A) Now, I decide to change my main folder structure, and I am moving my files and folder externally with the Windows Explorer. We can't do it in CO8, even I though I did it before, maybe in CO7, or confusing with another tool?
B) So logically, my catalog now has broken references, so I am just using "Locate" to find them back.
C) All good. Everything seems to be back. all my former settings of my pictures are valid with my new folder structure.
D) I am now closing my catalog / CO, wait a little bit to ensure that CO is completely off.
E) I am opening CO/this catalog again.
And kaboom: the moved references are gone, my catalog is broken, all my settings disappeared.
How to reproduce the issue?
Let's consider the following folder structure: folder A containing folders B and C.
A
|-- B
|-- C
1) Create a new CO catalog.
2) Add folders A, B and C in the CO catalog.
3) Sync folders B and C, import the pictures.
4) Backup the catalog and close CO.
5) Move A to P (P like parent), A and P were not related before (e.g P in another disk), thus giving the structure:
P
|-- A
|-- B
|-- C
6) Re open CO with our catalog,
7) Pictures from B and C are wrongly referenced, so "locate" A in P.
8 ) The pictures from B and C are restored. Everything SEEMS to be fine.
9) Close CO
10) Re open CO.
11) A is now empty, all references to B and C and all the work on these picture are gone! My catalog is now broken!
THIS NEED TO BE FIXED!!
Inefficient work around: export and re import instead of move and locate
Outside CO
12) Move back A outside from P as it was before step 5.
13) Create a new folder A1 under P. Create subfolders B1 and C1.
14) Copy the catalog from the the backup in step 4.
In CO
15) Open CO with that copied catalog. Picture references are back.
16) Export B into B1 and C into C1: export originals including adjustments.
17) Add folders A1, B1, C1 into the catalog.
18) Sync B1 and C1. Import with "Include existing Adjustments".
19) Delete A, B and C from the catalog.
It is also possible in step 15 to export A, B and C at once as a catalog, but I don t now how to re-import that catalog to the main one.
But mostly, the export/import involves a huge copy of files, something completely out of control. A big NO GO.
Export catalog issue
Another bug here by the way: the export catalog feature does not even check if the destination folder has enough space available! The whole folder I want to relocate weights 50 GB. I exported it as a catalog on my SSD which has only 30 GB free. I quickly realized a full copy was going on, so I had to kill CO process before CO would kill my SSD!
Feature Request
Aside the locate issue, we need a further Export feature, along "originals" and "variants": "adjustments" will export only the adjustments files, same as export originals but without involving the copy of the pictures. It will allow a much more flexible way to manage the file, and a safer alternative on the locate feature.
Fix Locate in CO8

CO9 might be just around the corner, but the Locate feature should be fixed in CO8!
EDIT: case 204619 in PhaseOne Support system.

Regarding your point A) above, I believe you can do it in C1 v8:
1. Create ANew under P
2. Add ANew as a folder in C1 Library tool
3. Select all pictures in AOld
4. Drag and drop pictures into ANew folder in the C1 Library tool
Regarding your feature request, I understand this is how "File > Export As Catalog..." works, provided you do not tick "Export originals".
Hopefully I have understood your problem correctly (your description is fairly clear).0 -
I did a full format on my system and a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro and Capture One 8 Pro.
I could reproduce the bug exactly as described.
However, I also found how to "fix it" by re adding the missing folder, i.e after step 11,
12) Add folders B and C. Click on each of them. No need to re import: the previous worked pictures are back!
Thanks for the "export catalog without originals", it indeed better fit my needs.
I also just try the drag&drop. That's probably what I was looking for a the first place, but not a sufficient and efficient solution since I have to select each folder one by one while I want to move a folder structure with many sub folders!0
