Depending on how you created your catalog, it might be better to leave the "Maintain item sort whenever possible" option unchecked.

See this forum thread: Manual Sort order in Catalog Sets

Thank you very much for the hint that the release notes of Media Pro 1.5 were actually totally misleading (at least for converted catalogs)

But I'm wondering how this behaviour is with new catalogs created in Media Pro?

A lot of customers have found that the new preference of 'Maintain item sort whenever possible' is confusing. I will talk with the product manager about changing the default value to unchecked as suggested here.

In MP1.5.0 the default settings are that new Catalogs will launch with 'Maintain items sort whenever possible' is enabled. But there should be no problem in disabling the preference and continue working with the catalog as desired.

    pah,

Thanks for your energy and interest in improving Media Pro. But I would like to point out that changing the default value of 'Maintain item sort whenever possible' to unchecked will be only a partial "bandage" (or "plaster" in British English) on a larger problem and will not entirely eliminate confusion. If customers see the preference is unchecked, they will be tempted to check the preference since they might not realize the preference is working opposite to what it claims. (It appears that the programmer coded this option backwards.) The only true solution is to redesign/reprogram the preference.

Here's my original suggestion for redesign:

    Suggestion to Phase One:

Assuming that maintaining manual sort only in Catalog Sets (not in the entire catalog) is the desired effect, it would make more sense to name the options like this:

    • Sort using natural order (e.g., 1, 2, 3...) by default

    • Maintain manual sort in Catalog Sets

Of course this assumes that checking the second option actually worked as intended.

Also, if these options were intended to be mutually exclusive ("either/or") and if they might conflict with each other, they should be presented as radio buttons, not check boxes.
