I think the preview will provide some sharpening regardless. To prevent sharpening from being applied, i.e. to output an unsharpened file, click file, preferences, process settings tab and select disable sharpening on output.

Jack is right, the way to stop all sharpening on output is to disable it in the preferences.

I'm just replying to add another note. With the Threshold at 0 there is actually more sharpening then with the Threshold is set to the maximum. Threshold 0 means "sharpen all pixels".

I've always had sharpening disabled within Preferences. To me, if the
sliders are set to zero, then there should be no sharpening in the Focus
window - ie, the output should mirror that of "disabled" sharpening. It
wouldn't be the first time I was wrong about something...

I agree that "Amount 0" should mean zero amount of sharpening, but it doesn't there is still a little applied.

Threshold though works as expected. It sets the the minimum contrast threshold between the pixels before they are selected for sharpening. "Threshold 0" means 0 difference; all pixels are selected for sharpening. The max, 50 (I'm assuming this is in percent), means there needs to be a 50% difference between the two contrast values before sharpening is applied.

Setting the Threshold higher will result in less pixels being sharpen. So "Amount 0, Threshold 50" will sharpen the least number of pixels the least amount--that is without disabling it altogether in the preferences.
