why no selection tools in C1?
I've often wondered why there are no selection tools in C1 software or other raw conversion software, but it seems that PS CS4 has such tools now to some degree, from what i read.
I would have thought it would be great to selectively process different areas of the image at the same time rather than having to create different exposed variants to merge in PS.
Would this be a possibility for future versions of C1?

wow wouldn't anyone else like this feature? Or can anyone explain why it is not offered/possible?

Hello
I think Phase One should focus om the capture and development section of photograpy and om de workflow from camera to a converted "raw" file.
Manipulation of that kind is for Photoshop.
They have a good base in C1 :: 4 and hav a bit to go before this is a genuin product.
There is som issues left, some missing parts etc, but it is on its way.0 -
As Roine explained Phase One is currently in the process of making CO4.x a mature product, which is a challenge in itself. 😉
Selective processing of raw, as introduced in Capture NX a few years back, and now available in a few other products through an add-in and in ACR 5.x (in PS/Bridge CS4) as well. It is currently perhaps regarded as a niche and nice-to-have feature but could evolve as a mainstream feature in the future.
I think that over time more and more RGB post-processing features will be incorporated in the raw conversion due to increasing competition between raw processing products. On the other hand, some manufacturers might choose to focus on simplicity and output quality instead of a bucket full of features. Capture One could be one of those. My 2 cents.0 -
While i think this sound a useful future addition, I would much prefer to stick with variants and the kick ass conversions of C1 than the features in ACR and its shoddy conversion engine.
I think C1 is more than bursting at the seams with features useful to photographers and with a little more nurturing will make us all forget our early woes and put version 3.7 to rest.
Lets get a product we're all 100% happy with before adding more bells and whistles.0 -
Basically...I'm in agreement with the above posts. I would add that the "film" curve options introduced to COne long before Adobe had a competent converter are sufficient to maximise image quality AFA any single exposure I've had to deal with....adding the H/S recovery feature expands that....I'm not convinced PS CS4 does anything faster or better on a single image... 0 -
It is a RAW processing engine, not photoshop. If I need selection prowess I'll go to other packages. 0 -

It's no secret that one can cover any of these tasks e.g. with Photoshop. I have done this many times also. However, the idea of developing one single output file with selective editing (where needed) would be a powerful feature to save time and files to handle.
I therefore fully second Mike's proposal and I would like to direct his question once again to the Phase One Developers. Would selective editing be a possibility for future versions of C1?
P.S.: Have you already had a look e.g. to the recent developments of B5 (Bibble 5)? It has implemented powerful selective editing features also. I know that it is a preview version at present and that it still isn't stable. But it's on a good way to serve clients' daily tasks on RAW images.

and as a result of this (not only this of course, but the desire to compete w/ LR) B5 was delayed for how long exactly ? almost achieving a status of vaporware... they don't have support for new cameras in B4 (~8 month since the last end-of-life update of B4) and they don't have fully working (not even beta status) B5... but of course selective editing is a good thing once you have it, saves time working w/ layers, etc in PS.0 -
The status of B5 (scheduled for "4th quarter of 2008") is rather unpleasing - I totally agree with you, Dee. However I did not mean to complain about another product or a missing feaure here.
With C1 the situation is different. We have a ready-to-use and (I hope I may say that frankly here) a really excellent RAW development tool at hand, and this software would be even more powerful and also more competitive if it were supplemented by features such as selective editing abilities.
I mean, the Pro version already allows for selections based on colors. So why not extend that to regions/parts of an image?

because it is a major investment (in terms of man hours) in design/code/test/build/release efforts, including a major UI rework, behind the scene... which might be only feasible in C5 {C1 v5} (see the similarity B5, C5...)0 -

I understand these issues as I am a software designer, too.
BTW do you post here on behalf of the C1 developers (are you a Phase One developer) or are you a C1 user?0
