Upgrade Path

Yesterday I input a ticket into the support system, made sure that it was input correctly (by checking that it was listed as an open ticket), now I see that it was deleted. I guess a technical hitch on the part of PhaseOne. ☹️

Anyway, I will ask the question here.

I have Capture Six Express and want to upgrade to Capture Pro. I have used Express (and its previous incarnations for years) and love the workflow, ease of use and fantastic results.

The cost of buying Pro is €229, whereas the cost of an upgrade is €199 (a mere €30 difference). Either it is a mistake on the part of Phase One making the difference so small (maybe the upgrade price should read €99?) or Phase One don't really care for the loyal Capture One Express customers and are willing for them to jump ship (say by going to Lightroom 4). Maybe Phase One are more focussed on their customers who have their high end camera and digital products? I'm just a lowly Nikon D700 user.

I guess it must be a web mistake on the part of Phase One, the real upgrade price is more sensible?

    Last case we had from you was back in March - so I guess your ticket never registered.

    Pro has a 50% off this week - hope that helps you.

    I'm rather shocked for your confirmation that the normal upgrade price of Express to Pro is not a mistake and really is €199 (+25%).

    Actually, in my view, even the 50% discount is not worth it. I think I will give it a skip altogether and stick with, for now, Express and run concurrently Lightroom in trial mode.

    I'm in the UK and some simple, inclusive of VAT, sums indicate that Lightroom is the way forward, even when compared to Phase One's 50% discount. For Capture Pro the 50% discounted cost is £112 and Lightroom the normal price is £104. Even the 50% discounted upgrade (Express to Pro) price is not favourable, being ca. £98. All these calcs do not include Media Pro (ca. £55), functionality that is basically included in Lightroom.

    I have invested a great deal of time over the years (as a keen amateur) learning Capture Express workflow and have always liked the end result. However, so far, Lightroom 4 is proving, for me, to be a compelling product, somewhat assisted by the awkward (!) pricing policy of Phase One.

    Let's see how I get on with the remainder of the Lightroom trail period.

    I may be worth mentioning that until Adobe released LR4 they were charging about twice the current price for LR the price having crept up since LR1 some years ago.

    It will be interesting to see how the long term pricing strategy works out. One can only speculate about why Adobe would choose to halve the price (of a product that was, apparently, selling well) at a point that coincides with a new release with (or course) new features and in the middle of a recessionary business cycle. It also seemed to coincide with a few other movements in the competitive marketplace. No doubt all will become clear in time.

    Meanwhile I think one is best advised to work with whatever one feels most comfortable with. For many photographers, pro and amateur, that seems to be a workflow that involves several products and a number of "plugins" as a normal part of the process. I prefer to try to keep things simpler and C1 fulfils at least 99% or everything I normally want to do. In fact more likely 99.99%. For me the price differential would be unlikely to compensate for the re-learning time needed to become adequately familiar with a new product. But your mileage, as they say, may vary from that view. and it really rather depends on what sort of features, functions and outputs drive your greatest needs.

    Thanks. I hadn't been following the pricing development of LR so your insight does change the picture somewhat.

    My main issue is the cost of upgrading from Capture Express to Pro, at whatever range it hardly seems worthwhile. For a bit more one can purchase a new C1 Pro.

    But as you rightly say is is better working with whatever one feels most comfortable with. For now I will continue running Express and trailing LR4. Let's see how that pans out. If it proves that C1 remains, for me, the most comfortable, I suppose Phase One will have another 50% sale at some point. At that point I may then jump for a new C1 Pro, that way I would have four C1 activations (2 x Pro, 2 x Express).
