Where/How does C1Pro store image modifications

I originally asked about "sessions" because the way that sessions are used in the C1Pro software is totally confusing. The pulll-down "session name" box seems to be totally useless.

Anyway, I'm now after another answer that is more helpful. When I'm working on my RAWs, I know that C1Pro has to store the different modifications to each image in some sort of database or file separate from the images (unless the modifications are stored in the IPTC data??).

What has happened that prompts this question is that I ran out of space on my D: drive that I was using for storage of all images. So, for this one trip, I opened up a new session on my C: drive under my MY DOCUMENTS\\MY PICTURES folder. Since then, I've installed dual mirrored 750 GIG seagate drives as my D: drive and so have moved all my images from the C: drive to my standard photo folder on my D: drive. Now, however, C1Pro seems to have lost all the image modifications for those images. I know they are stored someplace but don't know how to link them back up with th actual images again.

This session/collection business within C1Pro could be very useful if it really worked in a useful manner. Maybe there is some deep hidden secret in how to do this, but I'm at a loss and there has been almost no help for me with the last message that I posted.

    This is a User Forum. Most answers come from other Users, while we monitor to be sure answers are offered.
    The best way to receive Technical Support for Capture One is through creating a Support Case at the web site:

    The Support Logging System is monitored 18+ hours / day M-F
    A reply will be very timely and the Case is not closed until resolved.

    .C1w or the Thumbnail files contain the image adjustment data. These files reside in the Preview Cache.
    Default location is:
    C:\\Program Files\\Phase One \\ Capture One PRO \\ Previews
    This location is established upon install and can be changed at the Preferences.

    OK: I see the files in the "previews" folder.

    If we need to move this to "support", that is OK, but it seems to me that this topic might be helpful to some others using your product.

    Anyway:

    Why store "user data" into the "Program Files" area???? This is soooo MS-DOS'ish and is a really bad programming practice IMO. ALL data associated with a user really should be stored in the "USER DATA" area of the system. Storing anything in a System's Folder like this is just bad practice. This is my personal but strongly held opinion FWIW.

    Now then since you save ALL of the image modifcation data and ALL the thumbnail data into separate files in this single system's directory, HOW can I relink my real RAW images back to the appropriate C1w and C1p files???? A key advantage of C1Pro is the ability to quickly specify the modifications to be made during the RAW conversion process prior to the execution of the RAW conversion itself. Its this ability plus the ability to "background" the conversion process that makes C1Pro an incredibly effective tool for photographers who are shooting lots of images.

    To lose the connection between the C1w and C1p files and the REAL RAW files is a serious problem IMO. It would make a lot more sense for you to create a .c1data folder under the SESSION folder and then store all the C1w and C1p files there.

    I asked my question in the support area and got a really good answer. Plus, there was a reference made to the following link that might help others:

    The above link really gets into the details of how the settings files are handled as well as how to use of a settings archive.

    My real problem was that I did my editing on a laptop and then moved all the files to my desktop after returning from my trip. This loses the settings files.... What I finally did was to go to each folder of RAW images, do a select all and then did workflow->selected capture settings->save to archive. I archived to a single folder which I then moved to my primary desktop.

    On the primary desktop, I accessed each folder (have to give C1Pro time to synch if there are no settings files present for the RAWs), do a select all then do Workflow->Selected Capture Settings->Restore archive. This takes a while to go but it does restore all the settings files.

    Anyway, thanks to support for a quick response and a good link.

    I needed this!

    i think it would be great if we could have the same de-centralised cache as they have in Adobe Camera Raw, I can't stand the program, but that part of it makes a lot of sense to me.

    I do a lot of work for other photog's and often need to give them back their RAW files with the changes made..eg give them the sidecar and it is here I get stuck with C1.

    well, if this solves my problem then I am a happy man. of cause it provides that they also have C1pro hmmm...I wonder if that would mean that more people would need to buy C1 pro?

    ohh, I take it DNG would also solve this problem!

    any chance to get someone from PhaseOne to do some training in Perth, Western Australia...currently thereis NO ONE!

    it would be good to hear it from the horses mouth and get all the ins and out explained, I thought I was a seasoned (C1 since ver 1.3)

    I made an official request to Phase I that the modification files (.c1w) be stored with the RAW images. I then found out that the MAC version already does it this way and that there is not a separate folder for the .c1w files.

    I just got a nice email back from support:
