Tethered focus control possible with 5D mark ii?
Hello,
Does anyone know whether remote focus control should be possible with a 5D Mark ii when tethered shooting in v8.3.2? The documentation just says “This feature is only compatible with certain Nikon and Canon DSLRs.â€
I've been evaluating tethered shooting with v8.3.2 and so far everything works well except focus controls are not appearing. Remote focus control works fine with Canon's Eos Utility when I connect the same camera and cable to an old Windows laptop. I’ve tried two different lenses and had the same results.
The camera is on the last posted firmware (v2.1.2) and has the following tether-related settings:
C.Fn IV 1 = 2 (disable shutter button focus)
C.Fn IV 2 = 1 (enables back button focus w/ AE Lock button)
Live View/Movie func. -> Silent Shoot = disable (for firing of non-Canon flashes when tethered)
Thanks,

As far as i know (but i'm shooting Nikon), you need to be in Live View before the focus controls )the little arrows) appear. At least, this is the case for me.0 -

I just did an additional test and can confirm that the focus controls are not appearing in either the live view window or in any of the tools on the capture tab.
Interestingly, I just noticed that the camera tool states "No Lens Information" immediately underneath the brand and model name of the camera. Perhaps this is the core cause of why the focus controls aren't displaying. For reference, I confirmed the "No Lens Information" statement appears in the camera tool within both the capture tab and the live view window. Lastly, I checked the metadata on files I've captured tethered and the lens information *is* populated.
On a side note, I checked Canon's USA web site and the most recent SDK does appear to still support the 5D Mark II. This can be seen in item number 7 on this page0 -

Then a support case is appropriate. I have no clue what the lens (other than it being a MF lens) has to do with it. After all, CO isn't (or shouldn't) be talking to the lens, it should be talking to the camera. The camera should control the lens.0 -
I have no problem when using the Focus option (single, double, triple <<< or >>>) in the Live View Controls tool in the Live View window with a Canon 5D Mark II (firmware 2.1.2) on CO Pro 8.3.2 on OS X 10.10.5.
You need an auto focus lens, either in AF or MF mode.0 -
I must embarrassingly admit that this was user error on my part. 🤭
I simply never navigated to the proper place in Capture One to see the remote focus control buttons while my 5D Mark II was tethered. Perhaps my brain is wired differently from others but it simply never occurred to me that the remote focus control buttons would be located anywhere other than the same place as all of the other camera settings. I have, of course, now discovered that the focus control buttons are located in the Live View Tab -> Live View Controls tool of the Live View window.0 -
Good to hear you solved this! 😉 0
