Assuming the files are referenced (stored on your file system not inside the catalog)...

If I right click the catalog trash, and choose Empty Catalog Trash, I get a box that comes up asking me "Do you want to delete X images or just remove them from the catalog?" with three buttons for Cancel, Remove from Catalog, and Delete from disk. Do you see that?

Thanks Ian, you've just answered it.

At some point, I've obviously unintentionally changed the import to 'inside catalog'.

Thanks for your help. I now need to try to work out how many files I've duplicated!

"Empty Catalog Trash" does not work since Capture One 14, in my case.

    I am wondering what's wrong.

Yes, I am working with catalogs, I follow the instructions that CO wants, it shows me it would delete what is in the catalog trash, but when I go back to the hard-disk, the content is still there.

    Bottom line: What is wrong?

    Hubert,

I think you will find that Delete from the Catalog means Delete for the Catalog Database.

That is different from "Delete from disk"  - especially if a Referenced image file involved.

A referenced file might belong to more than one Catalog or session or even be included in a completely different conversion and editing application's database.
