My views on Capture One
So I have been using C1 since I bought the x-T10 meaning more than 2 years ago, I loved this software for its support of Raf and it totally eclipsed my usage of LR.
Now that the v12 is out I can put here some of my point of views based on Raf files:
-I loved the new luminance mask as well as Refine because auto-mask sensitivity was not very good.
-It's faster than before in loading
-Loved the Fuji film simulations, my X-T20 can finally use Eterna
-CA and purple Fringe reduction is good but still far from enough, it only take 30 to 50%
-If I choose the all photos catalog everyday it will still have to load the thousands of photos every time I open C1 making it slow, I wonder if we can set a cash file so the catalog is already loaded once we open C1?

Here are some additional points from my personal view:
> The new UI is not a real improvement. I appreciate the larger fonts in some places, but not everywhere. The contrast has been reduced, so the separations between the tools are less clear and the browser slider has become nearly invisible.
> No update of the lens database for me, many popular lenses are still missing.
> I still can not create HDR or panorama photos from a series of images.
> Image import is still extremely slow.
> Keyword management was not improved, still is not really comfortable.
> No improvement for the perspective correction tool.
> The new tools seem to be very useful, I just need to learn how to use them.
Over all, from my point od view, this is more a version 11.4 rather than 12.0 ...0 -

My saying, epecially while there are known bugs since many versions/years, which haven't been fixed once again.0 -
I hate making complaints. Critical and positive analysis to bring about refinement is my goal. I gave a 5 page write-up of observations and recommendations to support when I looked at v10. And having been a user of v11 since it came out, I have posted here and written to support many times with positive suggestions.
Now call me shallow, but if there was one thing that attracted me to C1 over LR. was the panels, the dark interface background, the crisp text, the small text size that allowed a huge amount of information in the panels, the sliders... I have two 24in HD monitors side by side, and they were just perfect when using C1 v11. Now, the more sickly lighter background colour, the bold, oversized text, much less information in the panels, blocky sliders, busy-looking menu drop-downs, all has made me kind of sad in a way...
It took me ages and ages to migrate my 75K images with all metadata etc over from LR. So much effort to swap to what I thought was such a good-looking and functional interface. Now, this thing that I loved the most, the interface, has been changed, it makes me wonder why I bothered. Yes, the workflow is still better for me in C1 than in LR, but why not give us the option of variable size text and colour? It's the thing we have to work with and look at on a daily basis. I am really sure this would likely look great on 4K screens, but I gotta say that my first impressions, as a visual sort of person is far from good. What a shame. Maybe an upgrade to two 4K monitors will fix the issue. Hmmm...
And I haven't even started yet on the features that some of us needed improved that haven't been touched (the lists in posts above cover much of that). The keywording and DAM features that are still not close to what we had with LR just makes me wonder how this even qualified as a full version release. I bought into v11 thinking, okay, v12 will fix all these little things.
How wrong I was.
I do understand that some users, who need less than me, who probably welcome the change in looks, and don't need more robust DAM features, will find things just perfect. But, having lived with these deficiencies for so long, with no apparent hope in this new version, and now with what I feel is a loss of visual clarity in the interface, I guess upgrading will not be high on my agenda, and more likely I will have to start looking around again for something from a company that listens to their user-base a little more... So frustrating that, in my opinion, upgrading will worsen the usage experience and give little in the way of upgraded features that many were asking for.
I'll play with it a little longer, but my hopes are not high. :{0 -
Hy easycass,
many started enthusiatstic with C1, made suggestions, told bugs to them , to see how wront they where (like you).
I think many small bugs could be fixed really fast, especially in the windows version. I really don't know, why they are not just doing this and make many of the users satisfied.
It is difficult to enumerate all the advantages of C1 to interested people, when there are some simple bugs which are deal- or businesstoppers for them. Also the prices today are very difficult to explain.0 -

I wouldn't call you "shallow". I believe as photographers we have a sense for aesthetics and as enthusiasts/professionals a desire to work efficiently. All these little things you mention matter to me as well.
I find the new UI to be a step backwards in many aspects, the bigger font size, different font style, and the change to the sliders chief among them.
Like you, I use two 24" 1920x1200 monitors that worked very nicely with V11. My desire to switch to V12 is greatly dampened by the prospect to having to deal with a UI that I find worse in many ways.[quote="easycass" wrote:

I believe there is no good answer to that question. If there is, I'd love to hear it.
As I said elsewhere, C1 is extremely customisable in many important ways -- one of the perks that sets it apart from LR -- but for some reason the font size/style and background colour shade have to be hardcoded? That doesn't make any sense to me.
Like you, I don't want to come across as negative. I highly appreciate how C1 is better than LR in many ways and am rather happy with V11 (I have a lot of suggestions for improvement -- better control over vignetting anyone? -- but overall I enjoy using C1). It is just hard to accept steps backwards that seem entirely avoidable by giving users a choice.0 -

Yes, agree with all your points.
I played with v12 for quite a bit. There are some nice features, but actually, even if the interface was still as good as v11, I am not convinced that the upgrade is worth it for me personally. The database is still not quite stable/fast (with 75K of images), and keywording is still hindered.
So I am sticking with v11 until 1) the GUI text/color is fixed/customisable 2) keywords can be individually defined as exportable or not, and 3) greater DAM speed/stability than we have with v11. That way I can remain somewhat positive without forking out for what will for me feel like a downgrade...0 -
Hello all 😊
Just had to compare v12 vs. v10.2.
Here is my cent. I really wish to warn you on a very good enhance about the tools Clarity.
The command Clarity is absolutely more efficient if you want to neat your picture. On the opposite, it makes a fabulous and precise definition without destroying the colors or gamma.
The command Structure has been reinforced and responds, imho, with better sharpness or smoothness due to how you use it. Same as clarity, this command respects the basics of the pixels.
Finally, I feel happy with this, it gives a lot more possibilities for creativity than the previous version.
Nevertheless, you will notice of course a bit of loss of details, or strong enhance. This is quite normal, nothing to compare with other softwares !
Enjoy 😉0 -
The font size is nicer for 4k monitors, and about right IMO, but an option for 1040 or 4k would be even better (I use both). I do prefer the smaller font of v11 on HD, and I would prefer it be even smaller. Really once you have everything set up and are a serious user you don't even need to be able to read the text and in general I'd rather have the extra space.
I agree with the other GUI changes. I don't really care personally, but I though the v11 color and sliders were just fine.0 -
My sole reason for upgrading my C1 pro v10 to v12 was luminescence masking.
I prefer the menus, font size, and layout of previous C1 versions. DAM is still mediocre to bad. The one reason I continue to use C1 is the IQ. I haven't used LR in several years (I switched to C1 with v9), but at the time, C1 was noticeably faster, and produced superior images. I have PS CS5 installed, which satisfies my needs for additional processing (rarely), that C1 can't.
The thought of going back to Adobe CC gives me the willies.0 -
I'm still on v11 but won't upgrade for several reasons.
1) I've written up quite a few bug reports and none have been fixed. Judging from what I've read here it sounds like that's pretty common.
2) I have a serious bug (database corruption) that I wrote up 15 months ago. TS says "send us your log files, send us your catalog". I've done that three or four times now. What happens? The bug is closed after a couple months - no feedback from TS, problem still exists. I updated the bug something like 14 times. I opened three or four new versions of the bug referencing the original, and the whole cycle repeats. All bugs closed, no feedback, no fix. They seem to have a "Gone With the Wind" attitude: "frankly, my dear, we don't give a damn". I paid $300 for this??
3) I read and and re-read the 12.0 release notes and all I could think was "that's it? Masking?". Should have been an 11.x minor release. I was underwhelmed. I read a lot of reviews before I did the demo and bought the software. A lot of reviews mentioned catalog stability and usability issues. I assumed this had been mostly been fixed but apparently management decided that masking would make more money than fixing stability problems. I think the customer base would be better served with a major bug fix, stability, and completing their DAM.0
