You don't say which version you're using, but in 4.6.2 on my machine...once an image is selected (and as I check, only then) the arrow keys work to move focus through the thumbs, while the mouse wheel zooms in the preview pane, and makes adjustments in the tool pane...

...so a little different, but MUCH faster workflow IMHO...

The standard keystroke is Ctrl+Arrow. I've customized the keyboard to use "," and "." ("<" and ">" without shift). I've also customized my mouse's tilt wheel to emulate the keys so I just tap the wheel left or right to move. Only problem is when the cursor is in an input field the actions will type out a period or a comma since that's what I mapped it to do.

    Common typo I suspect for 4.6.24879 a.k.a. 4.6, or a typo of 4.6.1.

I tried redefining the shortcut for "Select Next" to be the right arrow (I first created a duplicate set of keyboard shortcuts, selected the "Select Next" item in the Edit section, and hit the right arrow key).

The shortcut list then showed that the shortcut for "Select Next" was "right".

However, when I tried hitting the right arrow key, the selection would not move.

Any ideas why this does not work? Perhaps I did something wrong when trying to redefine the "Select Next" shortcut?

Or perhaps the right arrow alone cannot be used as a shortcut ☹️

You are correct that the CNTRL modifier is listed, however...the arrow keys function without the modifier by themselves, the CNTRL modifier seems to limit the arrows to a previous/next state. I use the arrangement of one thumb in a stack, so either right or down arrow moves to the next image, left or up the previous.....

The arrow keys only seem to work (to move to previous or next thumbnail) when the browser window has focus.

When the Ctrl key is also pressed (along with with an arrow key) then one can move to next or previous regardless of whether the browser has focus.

My question is: is it possible to redefine the shortcut keys so that just the arrow keys alone can be used to move to previous/next regardless of whether the browser window has focus?

As mentioned in my previous post in this thread, I have tried to redefine the "Select Next" function to just the right arrow key. While the shortcut redefinition seemed to have been successful (the "Ctrl-right" entry in the shortcut list was changed to "right"), when I attempted to use the right arrow (when browser window did not have focus), nothing happened.

    Any thoughts?

This is exactly my question. It takes a lot of time having to click back and forth to keep the browser in focus.

Ok, maybe this helps...the focus remains on the thumbs and the arrow keys work without the CNTRL modifier as long as you don't change the focus by clicking on another pane.

HOWEVER, the mouse wheel works to change parameters in the adjustment tab, and zoom in the preview pane WITHOUT changing focus as long as you don't click on another pane. Make the adjustments by hovering rather than clicking, that does not change the focus...it just performs the adjustments or zooms. Once you click on a pane other than the thumbnails...you need to click back on the thumnail to restore focus and the ability to use the arrows only in any direction. Without doing that, you are restricted to using the CNTRL modifier.

I usually do this making a pass through all the images to edit....only making minor adjustments to exposure and color balance, and zooming to check focus/sharpness, using the DEL key does not change this behavior...hope that helps...

    John:

Thanks for the hints. I never realized that one could make adjustments by hovering over a slider (rather than clicking) and using the mouse wheel to make incremental changes to the slider's position. However, there are times when I need to make large changes (to a slider's position) and (in those cases) using the mouse to click/drag the slider is much more efficient than using the mouse wheel. And as you mentioned, once the browser pane looses focus, one must either use the CNTL key in conjunction with the left/right arrow keys (to select the next/previous thumbnail) or one must re-click browser pane to give it focus.

    NN:

Following the suggestion made by Tom122 (earlier in this thread) I changed the keyboard shortcuts for "Select Previous" and "Select Next". As mentioned in my previous post, I was unable to successfully map these functions to the right/left arrow keys. However, I was able to successfully map these functions to the "q" and "w" keys respectively. I chose those particular keys so that I could keep my right hand on the mouse (to make adjustments) and my left hand over the q and w keys to move forward or backward in the thumbnail browser.

I also tested to determine if the q and w keys would work as expected when entering text into an input field. I selected an input field (such as "caption" or "copyright" in the Metadata tab) and typed the letters q and w. Those letters appeared in the input field as expected (the selected thumbnail image did not change). Then, I clicked an adjustment tab, and again typing the q and w keys resulted in the selected thumbnail moving forward or back.

Mapping the q and w keys to "Select Previous" and "Select Next" meets my needs for having an unmodified key to move forward/backward in the thumbnail browser pane (regardless of which pane currently has focus). Give this technique a try.

Hey, thanks for the technique...you are correct in that hovering is for quick edits and has limitations...

You option works great for click balancing and and sliders...so that'll be added to the arsenal, thanks for posting. J
