XMP sidecar on exported files

The jpg extension indicates use of the "Export Variants" function.

As far as I'm aware, there's no use for a xmp sidecar for jpg. Any necessary information can be embedded in the jpg file itself. Xmp sidecars go hand in hand with raw files.

I just tried an "Export Variant" myself, and voilá, no sidecar associated with the jpg was created. I assume the sidecars you see were created on another occasion. Mind you, I tried this on Windows, but would be very surprised to learn that that should matter.

    Cheers,

I think you must be using Catalogs. I'm using sessions and when you process a raw file it's creating the xmp sidecar.

    Support got back to me:
Regarding XMP sync on processed files, If the Output folder is part of the session then it will be browsed and subsiquently an XMP will be created.

No, I was using a session.

    For jpgs?

Ok, I'm seeing export variants now. I've never used it before. I've always used the process command. I originally referred to "exported files" in my post, but I meant processed files. But really its a similar idea just two ways to get there.

I tried it and I'm still getting a sidecar. But the reason is my export folder is set inside my session. So it's automatically creating that file.

I believe that is for all exported files.

It is not the Export or Process function, or that your output file is in the session.

I think the XMP sidecar is related to your Metadata setting in Preferences. Go to Preferences, Image tab, Metadata. Is your Auto Sync Sidecar XMP set to None?

I generated a tif, with the following settings in Preferences:

<Auto Sync sidecar XMP>: Full Sync
<Prefer sidecar XMP over embedded XMP>: Checked

As I expected, no sidecar was produced. Nothing then to disprove what I already stated:

    - XMP sidecars relates to raw files (and maybe other proprietary file formats) exclusively.
    - XMP metadata is embedded in file formats such as tiff and jpeg.

It is also my reading of the CO7 user guide, "Learn More" on page 100. The same applies for the following from Adobe:

If anyone can come up with instructions on how to make CaptureOne produce a sidecar for a jpg I will only be happy to learn something new. 😉

If your output folder is in the session favourites then it will generate the xmp file.

To clarify. DO want xmp sidecars for my Raw files and DO NOT want them on my processed files. Currently because capture one "browses" (as support said) my output folder it will generate those xmp sidecars on exported files. You can think of your output folder as a kind of favorite. Capture one is always looking into that folder.

However if you choose to export a variant from the File menu to a folder unknown to Capture One you will not generate XMP files. Or if you set your output folder with your recipe under PROCESS RECIPE > File > Root Folder you C1 will not generate XMP sidecars. Again because C1 is not "browsing" that folder.
