Monitors For Editing?

I have a dual calibrated monitor 2k, 24", and it works quite well with my MacBook Pro early 2014 (i.e. late 2013). Actually, this is one of the reasons why I switched from Lightroom to Capture One. At the time, Lightroom didn't give the possibility to soft proof on the second screen.
A 4k monitor is very gratifying, as you can see (and show !!) your images with a very high resolution. But for editing, I am not sure that a 4k is really needed : a 100% enlargement is always a 100% enlargement, whatever the display definition is, the only difference being that you will see a larger part of your image when viewing on a 4k when compared to a 2k.

Thanks for all the info, seems to be my thought process as well. May I ask what brand and model you went with for monitors?

I have a second Monitor, which is not 4K; I don't beleive I will be upgrading it to 4K. In my mind the reason for a second monitor is that I want one monitor for the browser, and one for the viewer.

For the viewer, I want a monitor with good color accuracy, wide gamut and high dynamic range. The monitor for the browser is somewhat less critical.

I upgraded my 27" iMac to a 2015 because the screen has a wider color gamut, and it also happens to be 5K.

I would say the 27" and the wider gamut is useful, but I woudn't do it for the 5K resolution.

My second monitor (now for my browser) was my viewer monitor in the previous system, it is a NEC PA232W. I like the NEC, but it is 23" and not wide gamut - if I had to buy it again I would buy a wide gamut monitor.

I have a MBP Retina 15" late 2013 (gamut about sRGB), as said above, that I used for the browser, the tools, and as viewer when I want to publish on the web (my website, Instagram, forums, ansd so on...). And it's my main display when I am abroad....
When I want to do some more precise job, such as adjusting colors, preparing images for printing or publishing books, I use the MBP for the browser and the tools, and my calibrated display (NEC PA242W - gamut about Adobe RGB 98 - calibrated with basICColor Display 5 and an x-rite i1 display pro) for displaying images and soft proofing.

I wouldn't upgrade your mac for 4k but the extra speed from a new mac would be nice. The new ones run rings around a 2012, time is money.
