When you export the original with adjustments, these adjustments are stored in sidecar files only CO8 can read. The raw is unchanged, hence the term 'original'.

Thanks Paul. So why, when exporting a RAW file, is there an option to 'include adjustments' if they are normally held in sidecar files that only CO8 can read - is this, therefore, for export to another computer using CO8? Presumably, when exporting to Elements for further work, you have to export the Variant as another file type (e.g. TIFF) if you wish to retain the flexibility of the layers.

Yes, exporting the Originals with adjustments in a side car file is for editing with CO8, presumably on another system.

Exporting as Variant processes the raw file with your adjustments into a flat, single layer TIFF file (or other file format you may select). Layers in CO8 are applied to the TIFF, not exported as layer (no other program would understand the layer format anyway).
