MacBook vs. MacBook Pro

i have the macbook pro 2.16...one of the reasons i did not go with the macbook was the glossy screen, maybe great for gaming, but not for graphics, plus the glare! the screens are a LOT brighter then the G4 series screens (even the latest ones)....apple today announced the new dual core MBPs and now even the 15" comes with FW800! and they accept up to 3gb ram...
if you can live with the glossy screen and want a smaller, lighter laptop for tethered shooting, the macbook is plenty fast enough...

when i brought my macbook it would have cost an extra £400 for the pro (including the more expensive applecare) i couldn't see the point in paying extra for a card slot that i will not use and a graphics card when i don't need a high frame rate (macbook will run an external monitor with no problems in extended desktop mode).

i like the contrast of the glossy screen and don't really get any reflection problems when viewing directly.

whichever one you buy it will be a massive speed increase from a g4

    Thanks for the replies.
    That's a 1:1 draw for now...

    Just my 0.02

Cost of a MacBook Pro is close to the cost of a MacBook + an Apple 20" Cinema Display

    i think you misunderstood me....
i use the macbook pro as my only computer right now, i could not live without the extra features....if you need a smaller laptop and have a "main" computer, the macbook should work fine...it gives a better bang for the buck in terms of raw power....personally i don't like the glossy screens....both macbook and MBP have their place and pros and cons...
MCE now sells a kit to put 2 harddrives in the MBPs (taking out the optical)....a great solution for me, having 2 hardrives in the MBP is godsent, i never really use the optical drive...

The brighter screen is not an advantage for me. As if you calibrate it, it usually had to go darker/dimmer. I still use Powerbook as I've just bought it last year. My cycle time to upgrade is at least 2 years.

I got the macbook because I use it mostly for putting photos on it to dump my cards at events and the fact it is the smallest and cheapest - but I hate, hate, hate that screen. It's hard to judge colors and even straight on I can see my face over every picture. In poor light like outdoors with people moving behind me I find the screen is like looking at two images. I'm just glad I don't use it for any editing but rather just to get me ahead in my captioning and to provide storage at events.

That screen makes it a laptop best suited for things other than photographic editing. Great laptop in every other respect though.

    Thanks for all the comments.
I have just purchased the MacBook Pro 2,16GH with 2GB RAM.

My dealer made me an offer that made the difference bearable...

excellent choice...can't go wrong with that..

about the glossy/matte screen: i personally don't like the glossy screen, maybe it makes photos "pop" more, i always feel it is a fake image, maybe it looks "better" but it sure isn't as accurate...if it was better, why don't any of the "pro" LCDs (LaCie, Eizo,...) have it? it does not seem to be cheaper or more expensive either way....i think the glossy screen option was a way for apple to make PC switchers happy who were used to glossy laptop screens...
