Just a guess: have you installed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 already?

Thanks for the idea but yes I can confirm that .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is installed.

Same problem here.

I had the same problem: in my case c1 5 opened correctly the first time after installation but failed thereafter, after I inadvertently opened C1 4 instead of C1 5 the next time.

Try deleting the license2.enc file from the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Phase One\Capture One folder and restart C1 5, which should then give you the option to run in demo mode or to activate. To be on the safe side you might want to deactivate the v5 license key via your account first if you've already purchased a key and activated it.

Tech support confirmed to me this morning that the above would be their suggested first approach towards resolving the problem.

Hope that helps.

Malcolm30, thanks for the idea but I'm afraid that hasn't worked. When I attempt to launch C1 5 it blows up immediately with the "capture one has unexpectedly stopped working" error message. I don't get a splash screen or anything so it's probably something fundamental causing me this problem.

Malcolm thank you, i try your tip, but not worked here.
My problem is the same as JES wrote.

Sorry that suggestion didn't work.

Prior to deleting the (corrupted?) license file, I had also tried a full uninstall and reinstall of C1 5; when that had no effect, I did a system restore to the day before the C1 5 installation and then reinstalled again from scratch, which didn't work either. Deleting the license2.enc file was something of a lucky guess. I hadn't included these additional steps in my post above as I'd assumed it was the subsequent license2.enc step that cured the problem, but I suppose there's a small possibility that it might have been the combination of that with the system restore that did it.

I'd also assumed that attempting to open the then deactivated C1 4 might have been what caused the problem with the license2.enc file initially but, if your symptoms were otherwise identical to mine (C1 5 opens normally the first time after installation but crashes before opening with the 'unexpectedly stopped working' crash report thereafter - no splash screen), there is clearly a more fundamental issue somewhere.

If it's of any further help, here is the first section of my crash report file that pointed me towards a license management problem:

<crashreport version="1.1" time="2009-10-31 16:10:05Z">
<exception type="System.NullReferenceException">
<message>Object reference not set to an instance of an object.</message>
<stacktrace>
at P1.C1.License.KeyHelper.ValidateActivationKey(String serial, String activationKey, Int16& keyType)
at P1.C1.License.LicenseManager.ValidateActivationKey()
at P1.C1.License.LicenseManager.ConnectLicense()
at P1.C1.License.LicenseManager.ProgramStartupProcedure()
at P1.C1.Program.InitializeLicensing()
at P1.C1.Program.Main()</stacktrace>
</exception>
<application version="5.0.33255.33248" variant="Capture One" uptime="00:00:14.0781250" />

I can't offer any further suggestions I'm afraid - mine has been working normally since then, and P1 tech support confirmed that my solution was along the lines of what they'd have recommended.

Regards, & good luck.

Same here. C15 worked a week or so ok, but now this " immediately with the "capture one has unexpectedly stopped working" error message."

Reinstalling did not help, sending error message does not work....There is something rotten in Denmark.

Support should say something.

Just to be clear, I have never been able to successfully launch C1 5. Not even immediately after install.
The issue has been presented to tech support along with logs and they tell me it is an issue that will be addressed in the next maintenance release so for now I will continue with 4.8.

If I found this thread in the morning...!

Same Problem after I worked out more than 100 pics before conversion!!!!!! โ˜น๏ธ

Edit: IMPOSSIBLE to accept this; therefore some ideas and experiments.
If the problem (program freezing) occures at startup or sometimes later, I think, there is something wrong with the license-routine. It could run in a never ending circle, because there could be a setting, belongs to the license-system, that isn't correct, or doesn't fit to the programcode, so the application hangs.
But what will be, when we try a 30-day-testversion WITHOUT any possiblity to call over the internet, so this license-routine brakes its doing before affect the running of C1?
I think, it could run without brake, except another problem in programcode!

Now I blocked CaptureOne.exe using the windows 7 firewall. The first programstart had an halt of some seconds, before starting the C1-GUI. This happens at any new startup. Program is now running (!).
At the time the conversion of my 100 pics goes on, and I will tell again, if there is a change!

Providing more details about your issue might help you more. Details about your system. Details about when the error occurs, what error, what you have tried so far. Just a hint.

I created a support case, and here is the answer:

...
you can re-download Capture One 4.8.3 from our archive which will provide you with an immediate solution:
http://xchange.phaseone.com/Content/Dow ... veWin.aspx

As for the crash with Capture One 5 there are no known issues such as this at the moment. If the application ran fine at first and then started crashing the most likely explanation would be that some corrupt file got stuck in the batch queue.

Could you please try uninstalling the application manually as described in Knowledge Base article #1158 and then install Capture One 5 again?
http://xchange.phaseone.com/Content/Sup ... nguageID=1
(I am sorry for the missing screenshots, not all links are yet active after the website upgrade)

I hope this will provide an acceptable solution to the problem. If not, please let us know and we will try to find another way how to satisfy your needs.
With kind regards,

Jakub
Phase One Technical Support

It's really necessary to call the support, otherwise we have to wait for months or more before our version 5 is running!

By the way an INTEL-User told me from problems too! They are in the same way unforeseeable as ours (AMD-User).

In the meantime my C1v5 testversion no more displays the RAW-pics in full-sight, but from 33% and further it is shown!

The next I do is following the devices from the support. I will tell you the effect.

After some 3 weeks of nightmare... Let's have fun, I want to share my experience with all people found of C1, which I still am..

Some 3 weeks, ago, such a nice upgrade, from C1 4.8 to the brand new C1 5. Download, start install...

Please install Net.Framework 1.0 which is not installed on your computer.

Why Net.Framework 3.5 already installed doesn't work, mmmmh ? Uninstall C1 5. Restart the PC. Total crash down, lost rundll32.exe plus some more...
Buy a new HD, reinstalled totally XP Pro, plus all professional stuff, save the 60 Gb pics on the slave former HD, uffff...
Go to PhaseOne website some 10 minutes ago, download C1 4.8.3, launch install.

Please install Net.Framework 3.0 which is not installed on your computer.

Once again : Why Net.Framework 3.5 already installed doesn't work, mmmmh ? Ok, let's be compliant ๐Ÿ˜Š
Launch C1 4, please register...

Sorry the limit of number of installations is full

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo โ˜น๏ธ
Any help, please ?
I'm just smiling to myself, because I don't have anymore the really first installation, that was on the slave HD ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks for all marks of kindness.

Nota : I was almost convinced I had to buy the Pro Version of C1 5, and I was thinking to have it as a Xmas gift. I must say that I hesitate until all the issues above are not solved...

Cheers.

Regarding number of installations or activations, you can manage your activations from the Phase One web site. Login and go to License Management and deactivate your license key.

Regarding .NET Framework. What did you install on your fresh copy of WinXP? Did you install 3.5 without lower versions (3.0)? Hmm, not sure that is supported. Let's assume it is; next: did you install SP1 for 3.5? CO5 needs 3.5 SP1. You can find it in Windows Update (go there manually), I believe it is in optional installations.

Note: just checked my WinXP/CO5 setup. In Control Panel, Add/remove Programs, .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is explicitly mentioned, so you can check it there.

My test-version 5 runs nearly good, without sharp pics in the viewer. Up today there was no more stop. The stamp-tool is a highlight in my opinion, but its slowing down the performance. The CPU-usage is really higher than in version 4.8 (AMD dual-core 2.300 MHz).

I was running the windows 7 RC since June 2009. The actual C1 version 5 seems to be a beta in comparison.
But we all hope, it will be better in the near future!

Hi Paul_E ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks a lot for the tip. I should try it very soon, but...

Let me wonder... If I deactivate my original key, shall I be able to use it again ? Shall I be able/allowed to receive another one if this license key is no more valid ????

On my former HD (which is now installed as slave HD) I had Framework 3.5, and I could run few upgrades of C1 4.8.X without any problem. When I wanted to install C1 5, I was requested to install Framework 1.... and the crashdown happened. No way to repair it, I can't even get connected to the Net to scan it ! I could get a copy of my pics through a command line. Feel lucky...

On my fresh HD, I installed WinXP Pro, plus SP3 with Framework 3.5 straight on from Microsoft website. When I wanted to reinstall C1 4.8.3 yesterday, I was requested to run Framework 3... ? I shall go for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 anyway...

I think I shall get offered a new hard disk for Xmas. One more... but later on, I shall break my piggy bank for C1 5 Pro ๐Ÿ˜Š

Note : I love this software over all, I really miss it โ˜น๏ธ

You worry to much. License remains valid. You can remove all activations on a key and start activating again! Unbelievable, isn't it? The only catch is that activated installations need reactivation.

Regarding .NET Framework (dotnetfx for short), I begin to prefer building the framework up from version 2, then 3 (do the updates through Windows Update) and 3.5 with SP1. CO4 needs dotnetfx 2, CO5 needs dotnetfx 3.5 SP1. CO4 also runs fine with later versions than 2 but start with installing dotnetfx 2. This all applies to WinXP.
Note that Vista comes with dotnetfx 3 and Windows 7 with dotnetfx 3.5 (selectable component, not necessarily installed).

Support:

we have found out that Capture One 5.0 might have an issue with some AMD processor in some cases and this will be fixed in Capture One 5.0.1 which is due to be released this week.

I am sorry for the inconvenience on your behalf, but could you please download Capture One 5.0.1 once it is released as this will most likely solve the crash issue.

I keep on mind your very helpful postings. Thanks so much for my future, when I decide to upgrade C1.X..

Same steps with upgrading Framework. But C1 5 asked me number 1... as said before.

Cheers !

Worry too much? I had 2 free upgrades left until v5 came out now I have 0. Phase One has always been really stupid about licensing and upgrades. Why should anyone trust them?

Don't mean to hijack your thread.

Assuming you had a CO 3 Pro license with 2 free upgrades, you now have 0 (zero) free after upgrade to v5. Sounds like correct math to me.

Now I tried to re-install CaptureOne in this way:

First de-installation using Windows software removing.

Then cleaned the system as wrote in this article
http://xchange.phaseone.com/Content/Sup ... nguageID=1
with original Phase One description.

At the end cleaned the Windows registry from all Phase One or CaptureOne depositions.

Then re-started the PC completely. After this I de-activated the AntiVir.

> New Capture One 5 Pro installation as we all know, clicked onto "start now"!

Instead of the software the error-window was started as described below from a other user, and running C1 is strictly impossible!

There is no logical reason in my system for this happens. Why the second installation as a testversion was running with really smaller problems???

This is something for Phase One, and not for the paying users !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Installation of C1 Pro in version 4.8.3 directly after de-installation of version 5 is no problem at all!
The Software runs at once, fast, and without any problems.

What does this say? !!!

I still can't get C1 5 (latest build, 5.0.1) to load on my PC.

It installs fine on my PC; when I run it, the activation dialog box comes up: I choose "Try" and the splash screen appears for a second, followed by... nothing. No running tasks, no error message, just nothing.

I am running Win XP SP3 on an Intel Pentium 4 3.06 Ghz Hyper-Threading chip with 1.5 GB RAM. .NET Framework 1.1, 2.0 (SP 2), 3.0 (SP2) and 3.5 (SP1) are all installed.

C1 3.7.4 runs fine, but for some reason I can't get either C1 4 or 5 to run.
