Media Pro crashing or "hanging"
My Media Pro 1.3 is continuously "hanging" which forces me to Force Quit. This is a persistent problem I have had with this and earlier versions of Media Pro. The catalog will hang even when I have Media One minimized and I'm not working with the catalog. I've tried renaming the catalog under a different directory and this has not resolved the problem. I've had my companies tech support resolve that these crashes are unrelated to any other issue but the Media Pro program. Any help would be appreciated.

I forgot to include that I am running Windows 7 and the message I receive when the program hangs is "Media Pro (Not Resopnding)". 0 -
I have the same problem
Win 7 64 bit
Software keeps crashing
I've been waiting for 10 minuites for it to transfer a simple DNG file
File scanning is slow and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't
Very tempted to go back to Expression Media 10 -
This has been the on going problem with Media Pro, every time I use media it always hang...very unreliable, waste of money and time... 0 -

I see that a lot when I am saving a catalog after a lot of work.
But patience pays off for me. If I wait a few minutes, it will return from "not responding".
Just don't try to do anything else but wait - don't click on a photo, etc. Patience.

I actually experience both. Sometimes the program just hangs. You get a dialog saying something like the program is responding and it goes grayed out. If you wait long enough it recovers. However, I also get actual crashes. When that happens I can only reopen the catalog (after restarting MP) in read mode as MP thinks there is a lock on it. I then simply make a copy of the catalog and use the copy. To minimize the impact I save the catalog immediately after doing an import and every few minutes. 0 -

For some working photogaphers waiting for the software to function is not an option, especially most of us have time contraint...
Reducing the images in my catalog 16,100 somehow avoid MP to hang. I noticed if there are more than 20,000 images in one catalog, MP keep on hanging and crashing several times... I wish they can release a software which is very stable and fast.0 -
MP crashed again this time when I tried to close it. I took this as an opportunity to see how the database is locked. MP creates a file that puts a lock on the database. That file is in the same directory as the database, is hidden and ends with MPC_0,. Previous versions ended with ivc_0, ivc_1, etc. The files show up with a size of 1KB (rounded up) and only contain the text IVIEW LOCK. I am not sure if this is just to prevent that a second copy is being opened or if there are some other files somewhere that have additional critical information (for instance changes made but not stored yet). In any case, if you delete that file then you can open the catalog again. 0 -

When you reopen after a crash try adding a star to one image then save, it is a lot quicker then saving as a new catalogue. It works for me. 😊0 -
I'm gratified to see that I'm not alone in facing hang ups., crashes and that really silly locked file. It says that I'm currently using that file and has to be saved under a different name. How weird is that? That happens on reopening a file at the beginning of most work sessions!
I was mislead into thinking that Phase One's version of iview media Pro had overcome file limits and could house over 100,000 files. Well not on my Mac Tower 2x2.66 GHZ with 16GB RAM and a SSD start up drive to host Media Pro! What also happens with large files is that set for frequent saving, say every 5 minutes, the very large catalogs don't get to open as they are being either saved or slowly opening. So I see auto save for every 70 minutes.
If one looks at the Apple Activity monitor one can see 100% utilization of the processor at a time when the wheel of death is rotating and the "Force Quit Applications" dialog box lists Media Pro as "Not Responding"! So if one waits, the program will eventually catch up and be accessible.
I've been gradually cutting down the size of catalogs and small ones work wonderfully. Media Pro works perfectly for a single shooting session of less than 2,000 pictures, jpg plus RAW, total. By 10,000 images the program is unstable.
I have wasted so much time trying to make master catalogs of entire disks. Media Pro simply cannot handle this at all.

At the very least, when there's process going on in the background after the application "stops responding", but is still processing, there should be a dialog box that indicates whether or not there's an unrecoverable error or if it can sort out the issue, how long it is predicted to take.

has anyone of you encountered a problem with Media Pro after renaming or updating it suddenly several windows pop up saying "out of Memory: please restart the application"
Is there an explanation and solution for this problem?0 -
Simple answer - no. However I don't do much renaming. I have done a lot of updating and have not seen this error. 0 -
I am also having this problem and it is making me VERY upset. 0 -
I strongly recommend to test import also without P1 rendering engine an WIC (Windows Imaging Component). A 3rd party support from camera manufacturer or good tools like FPVC (FastPictureViewerCodec) are supporting WIC. MediaPro is drastically faster and more stable with WIC. That is a pitty because the workflow with CaptureOne is affected, when not using P1 rendering. Due to this issues I use MP now only for my media collections but no longer for big photo and raw collections. If prefer and enjoy now the good DAM and perfect workflow between IDimager (RIP) and CaptureOne, respectively IMatch and CaptureOne. 0 -
Thank you Phase One for responding to this issue and your very informative input has really helped.
Nevermind, wrong planet.0 -
Thanks Johnny 😄
As you've seen via the support system, our responses are fast and thorough. If you feel the need to further address this issue please create one as you have in the past.0 -
Some explanation perhaps?

@Johnny - I am having all the same issues as everyone else above, also on a Win7 64bit machine. Hanging more or less all the time when I try to import images on either a new catalogue or an existing catalogue.
@Drew - I am sure that you do respond quickly to officially submitted tickets, but I think the greater community would benefit from you posting all of that information here too.
The way most people trouble-shoot is to google and hit the forums first, and then rarely do they go to the extra step of actually submitting an official ticket - mainly because there is generally a lag of a 1-3 days (if you are fortunate) before a response comes through. So imagine that for every 'official' ticket that you receive there are probably 10x other users or more who are having the same issue but haven't bothered to actually submit a ticket.
If the info were already here and available in the forums it would have two benefits: (1) the end user (me!) would be able to quickly solve the problem and move on (2) you would have to devote less resources at Phase to actively supporting tickets, because you would have fewer to deal with.
Phase is very fortunate that the community that uses Media Pro generally knows what they are doing, and are really passionate about the program, and *want* you to succeed because it gives us all a better platform.
My 2 cents.

I have the same issue, with 7 and XP, after the update 1.3.
I take a ticket, but no solution.
Today I reinstal 1.2.0 -
I talk PhaseOne for weeks for nothing.
There are a few days I returned to Mediapro 1.2 and everything works well.
Importing 36 000 pictures without crash.
Is that someone else can try this solution ?
Ps : Drew, please, What is the solution for johnny ?0 -
You have to appeal to Johnny, because P1 personnel is not going to reveal support cases on this forum. 0 -
I've had various versions of this software for years on my Mac.
Always upgraded hoping the problems would be fixed to be at least useable - unfortunately it never happened.
Media Pro has always been unuseable for me.
I've yet to find a DAM software that works properly, that's under $700.
I wish they'd fix this damn thing. I don't need to use this often, but when I do, I spend hours trying to get it to work ( it may for while and then hangs) then I spend hours trying to find another piece of software.
You pay money and you still end up with shit, no other business but the software business works this way.0 -
I have experenced same problems plus some more... (working with Win 7, 64 bits). Finally I felt I have done with MP and started to look around for another DAMs and currently doing some trialing with iMatch.
This is painful task to make a swap if you have some 7 years archive containing 80+ k image files. Fortunately my MP visit was not so long, so I have not everything to redo with another software.

I hear you. Let us know what you come up with. I
have reverted to using Expression Media which works (more or less) fine.
What I do find peculiar though is that Phase themselves seem to be quite silent on the matter in this thread - it is baffling to me that a company with an existing customer base seems to be ignoring that base of users. The amount of money that banks, cellphone companies, etc spend to *attract* new customers is huge; let alone the $$ to retain them. So with a motivated base of users trying to use the software I just can't understand why there haven't been official announcements/movement from Phase.
I suspect that the experience goes something like this: downloads trial of new software -> tries to get it work without hanging/glitches -> goes on internet / phase forum to search for solutions -> can't find solution -> can't be bothered to open a support ticket (not sure if Phase deals with support tickets for trial software or not) -> moves along and takes their business to another software.....

I just had another very bad crash during a "save". It was bad enough that the catalog was totally corrupted when I looked at it upon a restart. Fortunately, I had a backup I could reopen and bring up to date. I started a year or so ago renumbering them so I could keep track of the bad crashes. My latest catalog is v23. UGH.
If i didn't prefer MP +CO7 to the latest LR, I'd switch - LR has never crashed on me. But I'm losing my patience as I waste my time.
Just another note to the users - back up your working catalog very often.
I hope MP is updated soon - an update is overdue.0 -
Copy of my last message to Phase One tech case
"Hello,
I reinstalled 1.2, but the management of metadata does not work with C1 7.
I reinstalled 1.3, it still does not work in French.
I reinstalled 1.3 in English, it still works as bad, and does not recognize my French vocabulary for metadata.
The beta version 1.4 that you had kindly supplied has expired.
I can not work under these conditions.
When will we have a new update operation?
I began to test the software Extensis Portfolio today."
The beta 1.4 that I've tried worked better without being perfect.
I am completely desperate ...0
