Catalog on External drive used on Macbook and PC???

I have the catalog on an external SSD so that I can use either my laptop (macbook pro) while on the go or my PC (windows 10) when back home. Seems to not be able to locate the pictures when I switch platforms. This was no issue with LR. Please tell me I'm missing a step.
