Suggestions for C1
Hello! I'm working as a Digi Op and Assistant in Melbourne and using Capture One daily and I've noticed a few things that could greatly improve my and many other photographers workflows if they were to be made available. (If it's possible already to do anything that I've mentioned, I would greatly appreciate the guidance!)
1. Setting Guides to percentages - In Capture One 7, we used to be able to set guides to a percentage of an images dimensions, which was greatly beneficial for maintaining continuity and was really easy to use. In C1 Pro 8, the feature was removed, to achieve a similar result the only way I've found to do it is to add a guide, calculate the percentage (on a calculator) and drag the guide to that pixel location, which isn't the most fluid or professional way to add guides to exact locations. (I'm massively grateful that the option to have more than 2 guides was added though, life changer)
For this, adding a guide (horizontal or vertical) to an exact percentage or pixel location would be fantastic to have back.
2. Show in Finder for Folders - The show in finder feature in my typical workflow gets used fairly regularly, but I've noticed that setting a shortcut for this will only work if a file is selected, and not if a root folder (with subfolders) is selected in the Library tab.
As right-clicking a folder and selecting 'show in finder' works for root folders, having the option to shortcut this would be a big time-saver for me.
3. Physical Contact Sheets - We're consistently outputting low res files at the end of each day for review by our clients, I feel that the contact sheet function inside CaptureOne would massively improve the speed that we can our files to the clients, have the images presented more beautifully and appropriately (if they're choosing selects, all options are available to view)
I've found the contact sheet function that currently exists isn't practical for use in that regard, having an option to have multiple images on a single page, inside of a multiple page PDF would be great.
4. Auto Rotate on Import - When shooting flatlay product, occasionally images will come into CaptureOne as landscape images when they should be portrait orientation, when we rotate an image once it has been imported it does not apply to the next image on import.
Making image rotation apart of the 'apply to next image' adjustments would be a huge advantage and a more professional workflow than rotating every image manually on import.
5. Colour Readout Pins, Shortcut - I regularly use the colour readout pins inside of the cursor tool in CaptureOne, I'm wondering if it's possible to set a shortcut specifically for the colour readout tool? Much like 'w' selects white balance.
6. Analyse CA on Import - I'm wondering if it's already possible to analyse Chromatic Aberration on a tethered file import individually? As we regularly change zoom, lenses and distances on a standard shoot we've found that telling Capture to correct for CA isn't accurate as the shoot goes on, unless we batch analyse CA at the end of the shoot.
Is it possible to have CaptureOne analyse each file for CA on import?
7. Stop De-selecting files when Tethering - I spend a lot of my time renaming files to specific file names whilst the photographer is shooting, however I've noticed that even when I've got my 'Auto Select new capture' set to 'never' that when I'm renaming a file and a capture comes in, CaptureOne will deselect the file I'm renaming. This can be frustrating when naming the sort of volume that I'm getting through in a day!
I know that was probably a lot to go through, but if anyone has any advice going forward I would greatly appreciate it!

You are mentioning PDF as your target. The print dialog offers you the possibility to save as PDF. In the print dialog, you can set things like page size, number of rows and columns per page, margin between images, save your template for re-use, etc. The output will be a multi-paged PDF. Does this do the job for you?
Just make sure to choose any color printer before saving the PDF. A b/w laser will save a b/w PDF. ๐

Another idea (as mentioned else) : a blur tool with proper options
๐0 -
Hans! Thank you very much! I found it really strange that it didn't exist! Thank you for that! 0 -
WPNL A blur tool for Local Adjustments or? 0 -
Hi CamCooke
Thank you for posting your wish list! I want to add a "flip" tool. I find many images naturally look "better" (to my eyes/brain) when flipped across horizontally. As far as I know only PScc and FastStone offer this one-click facility.
Thank you.

Hmm, could you elaborate on what is wrong with the "Rotation & Flip" tool that is part of the Composition tool (Crop icon)?0 -

Technically that's two clicks - one to pick the orientation of the flip, one to action it - but a fair point, nevertheless... 0 -
Re one click flip, this is a one click option in Affinity Photo (but of course if you count in the clicks to call it as external editor, it's a lot more ๐ ) 0 -
Exact!
At this moment I use clarity and extreme noise reduction to simulate blur but a "real blur" or "negative" sharpness would certainly be welcome. Especially if we could go up to a value of 100 pix, for some extreme effect.
Why would you want blur when sharpness is "all that counts"?
Well... I for instance use it to simulate DOF of exaggerate /clean up bokeh.

Hi OddS
Well I'm flipped! Rotation AND flip are there in C1. Phase Caps it all!
So many tools, so few in regular use....
Thank you. Peter.0 -
Does anyone know if it's at all possible to set a shortcut to the Colour Readout tools? I can't find the tools in the Shortcut menu! 0 -

I am afraid it is not possible. Cursor tools like the Color Readouts are not listed in the program's menu, hence no shortcut configurable.0 -

Thinking about this I am not at all sure that such a short cut would be possible.
The nature of the Colour readout tool, as I see it, does not really lend itself to a short cut that could provide any real savings benefits over using the menu options.
Sure you could get to the tool a fraction of a second quicker .... perhaps .... but where is the benefit for the overall result?
I may be missing something and would be more than happy to read something that pointed out where I am missing the point.

Hi Grant,
Most but not all cursor tools have a keyboard shortcut, just like Photoshop. They are big time savers. They are not available in the menus (as far as I know). You have to click on them to select. Hence, the desire to have a shortcut key.
I am not aware of the reasoning behind Phase One's decision to only partly implement shortcut keys to cursor tools.0 -
As an actual time saving feature with the colour readout tool, it's going to be simpler and more fluid to have a shortcut available to Add and Delete colour readouts (as I sometimes have them everywhere on shoots)
I know you can change the shortcut from cursor tools 'white balance' for example is 'w' and can be changed, and as far as I know you wouldn't be able to change it back without resetting the Shortcut Set?
Any more thoughts?0 -
For anyone that doesn't know, I've only just discovered that you can right-click and delete all colour readouts! 0 -
I would like to see a Haze Removal Tool. As it is now I have been using Saturation and Contrast to do that but a targeted tool would be better for me. 0 -

Try Affinity Photo if you are on a Mac.0 -
That would be one way.
However we have been thought this loop before and there are clearly ways of dealing with the "haze" question in C1. They are most easily based on a preferred "style", or so it seems to me.
In effect the style as pretty much what any dedicated tool would emulate. They may seem like magic of some sort and they may be remarkably 'clever' about how they understand people's needs and join programming features together to achieve them - but that's about as far as they are likely to be able to go. With a little knowledge one can get there anyway. Usually, for most people and most purposes.
Just my opinion of course.
YMMV.

I have AP and use it as an external editor for C1. I know I can call it to do the Haze Removal but one of the things great about C1 is how it already contains so many tools that calling an external editor becomes a far less frequent operation than it used to be for me using when I was using other tools. Haze removal just seems like one of those things that a good workflow tool should have and that is why I suggested it.0 -
Allow select multiples when deleting: when I want to select a range of photos to delete c1 only delete one by one
Save for web Jpegs : my workflow would all be in c1 for low tea Jpegs to client however I have to batch process all my Jpegs through photoshop "save for web" to really reduce the file sizes saving valuable upload and download time0 -
jeremy62 - as far as I know C1 does a great job in JPEG compression, however you need to adjust jpeg quality slider.
BTW have you ever tried default PNG recipe?0 -
Here are my suggestions:
1> 'Save aspect ratio' in the crop tool options.
2> Continuous file naming when switching between tethered and card rather than setting the capture counter each time.
3> Switch the default 'Import To' folder to 'Capture Folder' not 'Session Folder' when loading a card.
4> Bring back the guides percentage box. That was very handy! (e.g. setting the vertical guide to 50 as a way of showing a page break on a DPS)
5> Colour coded folders in session favourites. I'd like to be able to colour code edited and non-edited folders differently.
6> Introduce 'Save as default for...' to the white balance tool. I understand why it's not there, but when you're shooting in controlled situations like a studio, there's a strong case for having it available.
7> Any changes in the C1 preferences, e.g. changes to preview size, exposure warnings etc be saved to your workspace.
That's all for now.0 -

Number One user error (which means you are not alone, do not feel ashamed): enable Edit All Selected Variants from the Edit menu or the tool bar. Your live will be changed forever. ๐0 -

ONE OF MY BIGGEST GRIPES!
Maybe I have a surprise for you. Go to the Next Capture Naming tool on the Camera tool tab. Open its action menu from the three dots top right. Select 'Use Import Counter' so that it gets a check mark in front of it.0 -
It's great to hear everyones suggestions! Keep them coming! 0 -

This sounds like the "edit all selected" is switched off on the tool bar...0
