Tethered Shooting question re focussing [SOLVED]

You probably should also raise this question as a Support Case if you have not already done so. That way you will get an authoritative response from Capture One. It does not matter that you are trialling the software in terms of getting a response. Use the Contact Support link in the Help menu.

But in the mean time you may have some luck from one of the users of the forum answering from a practical standpoint with their own experience.

    HTH.

Thanks Grant, I'll do that. Hopefully though, someone might have had experience with tethered shooting a Nikon camera and can shed some light?

I vaguely recall something a few weeks or months back on another thread - not sure if it related to the 850 - that raised the focus problem and related to the resolution of the feed available from the camera in some way. However I'm not 100% certain of the details or my recollection - hence the suggest to contact Support who should have the information you need.

This is the reply (albeit very brief) from support - they don't mention any issues with the D850 though:

"You cannot pick the focus point on which you wish to focus from the software here.
You can use the live view focus metre to see what you have in focus here.
You can then adjust using the fine tools."

Grant, your comment about the resolution of the camera feed seems relevant.

It is not really possible to see what's in focus on the Live View image if you are depending on it to tell you that everything is tack sharp where it needs to be. The ability to select a higher image quality for the Live View preview is not available, and viewing at 100% is not an option as it is a garbled mess.

Using the AF buttons do move the lens, but once again, there is no way to tell where the focus is with any sort of real precision. It seems that the focus meter tool is designed for when you are manually adjusting the lens - somewhat defeating the purpose of Live View in my opinion. As for using it for capturing images for focus stacking - forget it.

This is hugely disappointing and I can only assume must be specifically related to its support (or lack of) of the D850 as I cannot imagine how any professional could otherwise use Live View at all, given the inability to focus properly.

We are still looking at Capture One for its RAW processing and cataloging but our hopes of using it for our studio photography as well have been somewhat dashed at this point.

Looks like this is the topic referred to: viewtopic.php?f=68&t=26976&p=127320&hilit=D850#p127320

We have a job to get done just now but will try our D810 later and report back to see if we are getting the same results as Frank...

Did you try double-clicking the area you want to zoom into / focus?

Well, well! That worked. Looks like that's a critical but seemingly undocumented step in the process then. I would have thought the tech support guy could have suggested that - in fact he told me it couldn't be done.

I'm pretty sure I did try double clicking on the area, but because there seems to be no indication that this will be where the focus occurs, I assumed it wasn't working. Double clicking zooms the Live View preview to 100%, which in the case of this camera at least, produces a very blurry, artifacty representation of the image with nothing crisp or sharp at all. But following it up by pressing the AF button, then moves the lens and obviously from my tests just now, focusses - apparent though, only when examining the capture itself.

Thanks so much for your help 😄 There HAD to be something - I just couldn't imagine producing software with such a glaring omission. A focus square to show that this is the case as an indication would still be more intuitive in my opinion - It also helps as a heads up between captures if you forget to double click - a little green square reminds you where you last set the focus. At least include the effect of the double clicking in the help files...Perhaps they just assume you know... I'll mention it to support.

Great to hear it's working now! 😊
(I forgot to mention pressing the AF but you figured it out, nice)
