HELP! 1Ds MII Suddenly Wont Register in C1Pro 4.5.2 or 3.7.9
I'm dead in the water, and I'm very worried.
I've been using C1Pro 4.5.2 for a week now tethered with my Canon 1Ds MII, and it's been working great. (I'm running on a spankin' new iMac 24" running Leopard 10.5.5). Today, in the middle of a portrait session, the software abruptly stopped communicating with the camera. After multiple restarts, creating new sessions in C1P, unplugging / replugging cables, swapping cables, etc., I've had no success. The camera refuses to show up at all. I've tried it on another computer, with no success. I tried it with C1P 3.7.9, and it still no relief. I'm running out of ideas.
The iMac is running no Canon software. I literally pulled it out of the box, loaded CS4 (but NOT Lightroom) and C1 Pro 4.5.2. That's all it's running right now. But it acts as if there is no camera attached to the computer.
The camera has always shown up immediately in C1P. On the rare occasion the cable has disconnected accidentally, the most I've had to do is log out, log back in and restart C1P. Normally when I attach the camera, the software launches. Now, nothing...
Up to this point I haven't had cause to read these forum posts. But with all of the issues I'm now reading about with 4.5.2, I'm worried that somehow the Firewire mechanism for the 1DS MII has been compromised. Is there any objective way to tell whether or not this is the case? When I look under "About this Mac" in the Firewire box, it cycles for ~30 seconds then gives the following message: "Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices. Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec".
If I attach with a USB cable, the software sees and will attempt to connect to the camera, but the connection always fails. I think the MII has only a USB1 interface. It has always done that, and I assume that is a connection speed issue. In Lightroom it has always been horribly slow transferring files connected via USB.
Is anyone else experiencing this disappearing camera problem?
Assuming I can get my camera to show up again, am I better off going back to 4.5 or 3.7.9?
Please help!!!

Jim,
A few notes to reflect.
- As you probably know, tethering with the EOS 1Ds Mk II is a firewire operation, not USB.
- The fact that the camera won't tether with more than one computer, makes me believe that something is wrong with the camera and its firewire interface
- The shortest routes to test the camera and its firewire are: install EOS Utility and try to connect from there or contact a dealer and ask for either a MkII camera to try and/or him to test your firewire connection or contact a Canon Service centre.
- If you have not been altering your computer configuration during the period that you lost connection, it is less likely it is the computer or the CO-software and the choice between 4.5.2 versus 3.7.9 seems not relevant.
- In System Profiler (Programs, Utilities), when I select FireWire in the left pane, and I have not devices connected, it directly shows the max. speed of 800 Mb/sec; you could try that and if you have another firewire device such as a drive, connect it and see whether it is listed properly. That should you give an idea of the status of the firewire connection in your Mac.0 -
I'd agree with Paul on the interface one. It could be the firewire connecter on the 1ds is knackered.
I've seen similar issues with other 1Ds MkII's: There is insufficient support for the cable and the wear on the port over time can cause the connection to drop out.0 -
I had the same problem yesterday with both versions of the software and I tried everything that you did. I now have it working and I believe that it was the firewire port on the camera. I installed a cable support, available from Canon, that adds additional strength at the cable/port camera body connection. I also found out that I am not able to run both versions of the software at the same time and have the camera connected to both programs. When each program is running alone I have the camera connect immediately. 0 -
Thanks all. I've not had any success today, but that's only because I have not been able to focus on it. Does anyone know if my FW port is indeed "knackered" what it might cost to get it de-kanckered? Does Canon have a specific "de-knacker" service? Cable support sounds like a good idea. I'll post when I figure it out.

Jim,
If it is only your firewire port of your Canon that is broken, it is minor surgery and not that expensive, IIRC (I had it done once on my 1D Mk II).0 -
I have had the Port go out on me three times on my 1DsMII...:+{
Really stinks and a hassle.
I guess that is why they went with the USB decision on the 1DsMIII which stinks for Macintosh users...:+}
Cannot win them all. Good thing I shoot a P30 Now a days.

To the OP or anyone else...
Are you still having this problem? I have been experiencing this same exact issue lately with my 1Ds MK2 and my MacBook Pro. The camera simply will not connect. It seems to happen randomly. It has failed on me in the field, but when I get back to the studio and plug it in to my desktop, the camera shows up. I'm only running 2g of RAM on the MBP and there are no error messages.
Coincidentally, I'm unwilling to believe the fault lies with the MK2's firewire port, since mine crapped out on me a month ago (before I started using CO.4) and was sent to Canon factory services for repair. So, my firewire port is brand new. When I first started using CO.4 it worked fine. Now, connection is spotty at best. Pros can't work like this...0 -
I had to replace the FW port on 1ds mk2. part cost £16. labour £140. very weak. suggest taping cable to camera to avoid constant movement.
Also had connection problems recently. Leopard related. The following sorted it.
