colour managment oddity (or just me screwing something up)

If I set the colour to sRGB in web or output destination then the resultant jpegs or Tiffs look washed out.
If I then import these jpegs (or tiffs) into Photoshop and assign them the Adobe RGB profile they look like they should (nice and vibrant) If I then convert them to sRGB in photoshop they stay looking great in viewers with no colour management.

What am I doing wrong?

It's like they are still in Adobe RGB with the wrong profile attached.

If I set the colour to Adobe RGB then the resultant jegs look fine (when viewed with something that will read the profile information)

Any help greatly appreciated

  Be sure of your Color Mangement settings:

  If you want to use sRGB color space, then set Color Management to this profile at the Destination ( Working Space).
  Now all Thumbnails and Previews will be shown in sRGB
  At the Process tab, be sure Color Management workflow is set correctly as well. If all settings are correct, then absolutely - positively you will be processing an image with sRGB as the embedded profile.
  This can be verified in Photoshop.
  
  Processing to sRGB and then converting to Adobe RGB will result in poorer color since you've already lost or discarded color information. Adobe RGB is a larger color space than sRGB which fits inside of this space.
  
  In General:
  sRGB is for Web display and for Labs using Fuji paper & chemicals
  Adobe RGB (1998) is for Kodak Labs
  
  When Capture One is installed, you are asked about running a Photoshop .exe
  Doing so makes sure Photoshop preserves an embedded profile.

  Thanks for the reply Keith.
  There's the rub. I have it all set up as you describe.
  I am not trying to output to sRGB and then change to Adobe RGB. I was trying to just output to sRGB. but despite having the sRGB profile assigned to them (PS confirms this) they don't look right. They look right if I assign the Adobe RGB profile to them in PS afterwards (that is assign rather than convert)
  
  I'm probably not describing that very well 😕
  
  Anyway I have Phase one set up to output to sRGB as the web destination but although they come out with sRGB profiles attached to them they don't look right.
  I don't know if that makes more sense.
  
  If I output as Adobe RGB they all look fine in colour managed apps (PS and ACDSee) but they look washed out in non colour managed apps (as I would expect) however the sRGB ones also look washed out in non colour managed apps (and colour managed ones come to that) which I would not expect.
  
  I need a set output as sRGB for the client to look at and a set output as CMYK for the printers.
  
  
  I am on a laptop at the moment. When I return from my travels I will install Phase On on my desktop and see if it behaves diferently there. I just wanted to get some of the work out of the way while I'm traveling so I don't have so much to do when I get back.
  
  I am trialing Phase one for tethered shooting BTW and apart from the small problem above it is proving to be very good. I've never shot tethered before and it's a real time saver
