Actually you're not doing anything wrong.
Problem is that the tiff stored by On1 is not compatible with C1. It has to do something with the alfa channel. Either C1 should be compatible with more file formats or variants or On1 should add the possibilty to store the correct file.
I think I read somewhere that C1 is working on expanding the supported file typs, so let's hope for the best.

Does that mean you cannot use On1 anymore?
Imo you still can. Only, you have to add all adjustments and metadata to the picture before going to On1. Then you go to On1 to finish the post proces.
After returning to C1 you can not make any updates to the tif, but you can open it again by using the 'Edit with' option. Not what you want, but for now it'll have to do ☹️
Alternatively you could use jpg instead of the tif.

Actually you can do what I do when I run into this problem.

I also use OnOne (sometimes) with C1 and, yes, the returned tif contains an active alpha channel with C1 does not read. The result is an image that C1 can not display and can not be used for further editing. However all you have to do to fix the problem is use the C1 Open With functionality to pass the image to some pixel editor that can then save the image without the alpha channel. I use Affinity Photo for that although even Elements will fix the problem for you and there are probably a lot of free or very inexpensive pixel editors that would work just as well.

I know it is a pain to process the image twice, but that does fix it.

A second alternative (which I do not use) is to pass a jpg to OnOne instead of a tif. When OnOne saves a jpg back it does not include an alpha channel and the problem should not appear.

I downloaded The Gimp a while ago but couldn't find if it was possible. But today Google helped out.
If you don't have Photoshop and you don't want to spent money it is a good alternative. Go to Layer → Transparency → Remove Alpha Channel. after that save the tiff and it will show up in C1.
