Inconsistent Cropping

I am sure there is a rational explanation for this, but sometimes when I select the cropping tool it immediately gives me a large vert cross with arrow heads on the ends, requiring me to go to the margins and adjust them in to accomplish the cropping I wish. Other times it gives me a little cross cursor which allows me to click and drag to open and control the size and aspect ratio of the window. I haven't been able to discern why, or how to control which I get. I usually prefer the little cursor so I can just form the window quickly. Anyone know how I can get consistent results?

    If there is no crop already you will get the "little cross cursor" straight away, although you could also drag in from a corner of the image.

    If there is a crop already and you want to start a new crop instead of adjusting an existing one, you can hold down the shift key and start a new crop which ignores the existing one.

    If you get a pre-cropped image that you have not knowingly cropped yourself the typical reasons for that might include:

    Rotation correction

    Lens correction automatically applied

    A preset or style which includes a crop to dimensions that are different to the original sensor captured image dimensions.

    Copying settings from one image to another when the orientation of the image is different - e.g landscape/portrait.



    Things like that.
