I get confused with too man choices, please help an old man.

I am using the most recent versions of both Media Pro and CO 6 and need to know the correct way to set up both the IPTC selection in both programs so they talk to and update each other auto-magically.
My goal is to import into MP and keyword, rate, caption, cull the heard. Then I would like to open up a new session with CO 6 and see this IPTC information embedded into the IIQ or CR2 RAW files.
I am confused by all the ignore if that XMP, this there, flip, flap , flop embedded metadata. Is there a simple recipe to get these two application to talk with one another?
How do I set this up? I have read through the help files and forums, but can't seem to find the right magic beans to get this done.
