Capture One V4.0
I have just attended a Phaseone workshop with a speaker from LA who shoots fashion and beauty. At this workshop, Phaseone staff demoed a partialliy working V4.0. The user interface certainly got uplifted and refreshed. Speeds look good and layout is also very tidy. There are some new tools but the one I like is the Shadow and Highlight. Seems to me if you like LR's Highlight, Shadow, Light and Dark sliders, the S & H sliders on V4 will be welcomed. Price quoted was EURO99 but I'm not sure if he meant Pro although demo was for Pro. Free upgrade for current Pro and DB owners.
I think despite having to wait and whine for so long, the end is near and it appears the reward is quite sweet.
One question I forgot to clarify is, if we bought V3.7.7 and are promised a Free upgrade to V4, would that upgrade count against the 2 upgrades that normally comes with C1 Pro? Keith perhaps??

I hope you're right. However, keep in mind that PhaseOne also demoed Version 4.0 near the end of last year, and announced that LE would be out before the end of 2006, and that Pro would be out shortly after that.
I think it is a mistake to get too excited about it before it is released.
I suspect (hope) that the delay is something that surprised PhaseOne - either a technical problem, an additional capability that they chose to add, or even an IP issue. The change from "by the end of the year" to "sometime in 2007" appeared to be unexpected. PhaseOne has not publicly expressed a reason for the delay, and in this forum has indicated that no reason will be forthcoming, and that there is no reason that it should. Anyone who thinks otherwise childishly expects instant gratification. Personally, I don't see the connection between instant gratification and expecting a company to either honor their (informal) claims and commitments, but perhaps that's just my lack of conceptual perception.
At any rate, I hope you're right, but I don't see any reason to get excited about a possible upcoming release. After all, the beta isn't even out yet.

I hope so too but from what I understand, their software engineers re-wrote V4.0 from scratch so they had to spend more time on this than planned. If what I saw today is going to be translated into a full blown V4.0 by December 2007, then I would be quite happy to wait. Beta should be circulating soon from what I was told... let's see. 0 -
I'm not at all happy to wait.....and wait....and wait, for V4.0. I have a P45+ back which is not supported in Lightroom or ACR so I am stuck with the current version of C1, which is totally inadequate to process the high dynamic range files from this back. I am an outdoor photographer, not a studio photographer with controlled lighting. my deep shadows go an awful inky black if I want to keep tone in my highlights. Short of blending in Photoshop, I have P45+ files that can't be processed to any high degree.

PRO version owners have 2 Free UpGrades and LE owners 1
Yes, one of these will have to be redeemed in order to move to 4.0
Current PRO owners can install and use 4.0 LE AND Phase One Digital Back files are supported in 4.0 LE 😄

I received a different answer in an email from Phase:
You will be entitle to the new Capture One 4 if you purchase Capture One PRO 3.7.7 today.
It will not deduct an activation, before you activate the Capture One 4 PRO version when available next year.
The price of Euro99 is for the Capture One 4, the price of Euro499 is for the Capture One PRO
Hope this helps.

In clarification...
UpDates = fixes Bugs and adds new DSLR models and are always Free
UpGrades = adds Features and Functions and overall program improvement and are chargeable
Activation = a Single User License allows 2 Computer Activations
Current Version 4.0 Beta IS Capture One LE
All PRO owners can download and install this version.
Beta / Release Candidate / Final Release are the stages of progression for this UpGrade.
I believe what my colleague is stating is that a PRO owner will be able to install and activate 4.0 Final and it will not count as an Activation of the PRO.
Therefore, when 4.0 PRO is available, you redeem a Free UpGrade, Download, install and Activate your 2 computers.
I will seek clarification on this issue and repost if I'm in error.

HG,
...well, I wasn't wrong 😊
All PRO and DB Owners will be able to install and activate Capture One 4.0 when it is in the Final Release and this Will Not Count or require 1 of your Free Upgrades.
In other words, 4.0 is Free to all DB and PRO Owners and you will be able to activate this version with your Product Key for PRO / DB.
When the PRO / DB UpGrade becomes available, you will have to redeem 1 of your Free UpGrades.
Reminder* Beta and Release Candidates will expire and cannot be activated. Only a Final Release can be activated.
Cheers,
K C0
