Need guidance > LR4 to CO 7.x
Hello all,
I am in the midst of a trial of Capture One Pro. So far I love the program. Mostly. 😊 There are some wonderful features here that I wish LR had, and my output has never looked better. However, I find myself in a bit of a quandary and I could use some guidance from more long time users...
I primarily shoot sports. And I don't mean posed sports photos like Phase One has on their youtube page to show sports workflow. I also shoot fashion/beauty/swimsuit both in studio and outside. In general, I use a product called Photomechanic for ingest from cards to my drives. It does not modify the RAW files, but adds sidecars that contain all my metadta. It's also insanely fast. The next piece of my workflow has been bringing those RAW files into LR. Lately, I have been bringing the RAWs into both LR and CO so I can compare. However, I am facing the following challenges:
1. The catalog size on CO is a LOT larger than the corrosponding catalog in LR. I leverage Dropbox to store my catalog to facilitate offline browsing of images when I am away from my home office. the size of the C1 catalog is making that look like a real problem. I am not storing images inside the catalog. Can anyone speak to this? is it the fact that my previews are built at 2560 pixels that's killing me?
2. The import time on CO seems to be quite a bit longer than LR. Again, I wonder if this is because it's building such large previews but I'd like to hear from those who use both programs, or have migrated one direction or the other between the programs.
3. One of the things I greatly enjoy about LR is it's ability to invoke other editing programs as desired. I can call Photoshop, or any of a number of plug-ins to handle certain tasks, and have the file come right back into LR. Does CO have an equivalent?

I'm in very much the same situation as you although I'm not shooting sports.
The LR catalog does not contain the previews so its smaller.
You can set up an export recipe in CO that will open an application once completed. You still have to re-import the file though. I'm hoping that CO developers do something about this shortly.0 -
Ah yes that's right. LR does a separate catalog and preview file... That's going to be a tough nut to crack... it's tough being caught between two worlds. The need for speed for sports, and the need for optimum image quality in portrait/fashion.
I guess I'll see how everything shakes out over the coming weeks. Thanks for your reply.0
