    Hi Mark,

This is untypical behavior and could be something in your setup. Basic troubleshooting is to experiment with the OpenCL or hardware acceleration setting in Preferences > General tab.

More advanced troubleshooting is available from Phase One support. With a number of log and system report file they can get easier to the bottom of it then can be done from the forum.

    Hi Mark,

This doesn't directly address your issue, but I wanted to chime in regarding the system specs you posted.

Specifically about only having 8GB of RAM installed on your machine.

I highlight it because the way multi-core processing works, your ram is evenly distributed among the cores. With 6 cores, you are getting just over 1GB of RAM assigned to each core and this is definitely non-optimal.

In addition to disabling OpenCL as Paul mentioned (which is always a good idea if your video card isn't on the hardware compatability list that you can view here ) I strongly recommend beefing up the installed RAM on your system since the export/process function is highly dependant on multi-core functionality, your machine will breath much easier with 32GB or 64GB of RAM.

    Good luck!

First multi-core processors DO NOT divide the memory up. The memory is SHARED, all processors can use all of the memory, it is the programs that run that determine how things work. At any given moment any processor can be running any program, the OS usually does a priority of leaving the core that is currently running a processor running the same process at the next time slice (this allows the cache not be have be reload). So If CO8 needs 5Gig of memory, the OS gives the Program 5Gig of memory. Which processor or in the case of multi-threaded programs, processors are running the program the OS handles.

On of the GOOD/BAD features of OSX, is that the system uses a lot of memory for what is called purgeable Memory, this is data that the OS thinks might be used soon by a program or the OS, the OS amount that can be seen is on the "(Memory Tab)" under "File Cache:", an applications amount can be seen under the "(CPU Tab)" if you turn on the "Purgeable Mem" column.

So here is what I see on my system:

Again looking at the Activity monitor (Memory tab) you can see how much memory programs are taking. In my case with CO8 open about 8500 pictures in catalog, CO8 is using about 600MB of real memory, after opening and not touching any thing. After viewing a few images at full res memory went up to 1.6GB. With Total Memory used on the system up to 11.5GB, which 3GB is file cache. I am sure that the memory would go up the more editing and such. I did a select all on a Album that contained 650 pictures and CO8's memory went up to 2.2GB. (With total system memory used was 13GB), and the "File Cache:" went up to 5GB.

So the Question is 8GB ram enough, on my system I have 12GB used, But also have a lot of programs open and running. My iTunes is using 1.2GB. So If you ask me, I think 8GB would be enough if you had no other programs open, (And turn off TimeMachine, as that uses a lot of memory when searching for what needs to be copied, my "File Cache:" went up to 7GB) and watched what what you did. But 16GB would be better.

My suggest, open Activity Monitor and look at the Memory tab, what you really never want to see is any value in the "Swap Used:" field at the bottom of the window and/or where "Virtual Memory" does not equal "Physical Memory". Either of these two settings show you do not have enough memory, and the system is using the hard drive.

As my Graphics card is not supported for CO7/8 I cannot say if more memory would be used with OpenCL turned on or off. My guess would be more, as the buffers required. But that would be an experiment someone with a supported card would need to do.

    Robert
