Why I"ll not upgrade from EM 2 to MP...
Hello from France.
I use Expression Media 2 and I would explain why I do not want to upgrade to Media Pro... ☹️
EM2 is in french, not Media Pro. But this is not an essential point (for me). The main problem is that Phase One did not improve really EM2. Think about obsolete fields (according to IPTC rules), like Personal Categories : still here, but new fields (which are not in use in EM2), like IPTC Extension : where are they ?
EM2 is not "alive", but Media Pro looks like it... So, looking for a new DAM, I think I'll choice another one (I am actually testing a program and I think it would be a good choice. This program contains all the fields from EXIF, IPTC and XMP and offers much more possibilities than Media Pro).
Why explain this ? Well, because I was really disappointed by Media Pro ; I excepted more than a simple change of screen color. The speed of EM 2 is well known (it is faster than many other programs I tried before) and its "son" Media Pro is also fast, but this is not sufficient to purchase it.
I'll have a look on Phase One website, waiting for a really new catalog manager, based on Expression Media but with real improvments... 😊

You are not alone ... the lack of localization is a real disappointment - one amongst many. I have moved on to Idimager which offers much more control for a bit of speed loss.. 0 -

That is the "other" software I was talking about... I'm still testing IDimager (I just leave W7-32 for W7-64 with an increase of memory - and some problems with my GeForce graphic card, but it is fine now - I hope it will be for a long time !)
However, I use MP 2 with an other computer which is used for scanning slides with the excellent Nikon V ED. I am obliged to do this because Nikon 🤬 does not upgrade its drivers and the scan does not work with 64 b. systems ! I must say that EM2 is better than IDi for this work (perhaps because I know it very well). But IDi is really a very good product.
Good pics, regards.0 -
Give Vuescan a try - it works really well with the coolscan is windows 7 64bit.... nikon should get out of the software development biz... terrible interfaces and no support / upgrades... sound familiar? 😊 0 -

Thank you... Coincidence : the day after I wrote my precedent message (sunday 9), I remembered VueScan because there was a thread on it in Photoshop forum and I read it once. I downloaded VueScan and you're right : Nikon Coolscan V ED works fine with W7 64. So now, my other computer went back in its closet and I work with only one (it is more convenient !)
Bridge (just to have a look on the photos) + Photoshop to improve (when it's necessary) + IDimager to list = a good team.
Media Pro ? Maybe later if it really changes, but... who knows ?
Hope nice photos for you, regards from France.0 -
Glad it works out for you.. its the combo I use as well (even Idimager) and cannot be happier (well - I wish Idimager was faster for sure but it is adequate for what I do). MPro.. perhaps someday... if only Picasa would get more "professional" - it could be an ultimate solution. Enjoy...! 0 -
Picasa is very poor for metadata treatment. No possibility to tag localisation (according to Photoshop rules), only basical keywords... The search is aslo as poor as possible...
Except for its speed, Picasa is far away from a real DAM... But I suppose that is not the aim. Picasa is not dedicated for photographers, just for "Monsieur-tout-le-monde", as we say in french...0 -
Hello again...
Some news : I came back to Expression Media 2. IDimager has many possibilities... but perhaps too much for me. I retrieved with pleasure the legendary speed of EM 2, its simplicity and efficiency... And my native langage.
You can imagine how surprised (and happy) I was when I red the last info : Media Pro 1.1 released... and in french ! I downloaded and begin immediatly to try it...
Well, no really changes... ☹️ Always the same quality and the same (little) defaults. So, why buy a new license ?
Very funny : the french help file say (in case of problems) : "Vérifiez que vous avez installé les logiciels suivants : la version la plus récente d'Media Pro à partir du site Microsoft Expression" 😄
That's what I call : a fast and incorrect translation, plus a great publicity for Microsoft... Moreover, there are other mistakes in the translation.
Conclusion : hurrah for EM 2. Phase one programmers have a hard work (integration of last IPTC fields, limits of catalog, etc.). Waiting for the glorious day when Media Pro will be really a new DAM, as fast as EM 2, I'm sure that french users of EM 2 will not be charmed by the "french" version of MP 1.1.
Wait and see...0 -
No doubt, the French translation is "Made by Microsoft", with all its absurdities and aberrations. (see http://iview.free.fr/Traduction.html)
The return to Europe was given hope after an exile at Redmond who had feared his death.
Alas ... !

Résultat : me voilou reviendu à Expression Media !
Bah, confiance. On verra bien.0 -
