white backgrounds not white in C1 v7
Apologies if this topic has been posted before... I'm a regular C1 user who has recently had to go back to shooting tethered with 'Another' (am I allowed to mention it by name?) software due to the known stability issues with Apples' OS, Canon and C1. In this other software, my white studio backgrounds are reading pure white (255). When the images are viewed in C1 v7, the whites are reading in the late 240s. Trying to push the exposure to white just gets ridiculous and ugly pretty quickly. I know what my foreground and my background exposure readings are on set and I know that the white background should be reading white. This is a regular client and I have shot the same set up tethered many times previously with C1 v6 and never had this problem. I'd be glad to know if I'm doing something stupid with the new version of C1 (which is a fantastic update, by the by).

I'm not sure why C1 is giving you different clipping details. Couple things to check would be the camera profile that is being applied automatically and if there is any HDR adjustments being applied. If not, a quick fix might be to adjust the highlights potion in the levels tool. That would probably yield better results for what you describe rather than the exposure tool. Just some food for thought. 0 -
Luminance values in raw files are better regarded as relative then absolute values. It is the software, numerous tools and countless combinations of settings that determine the end result.
An explanation for what you experience is that CO7 has improved highlight recovery. Also, tools like contrast, HDR and Clarity have a different effect with values we used in CO6.
You might need to readjust either during capturing or in CO7.0 -
Thanks for the replies.
Steven, the camera is the 5dMk3 and the profile is the one for that camera; the HDR settings are at 0 and I haven't found any other settings that could be causing this. Like you suggested, tweaking the levels output to about 250 brings the whites back to 255. No disaster has occurred as it's an easy enough fix, it's just odd. To be honest, as there are a lot of images to be retouched, the retoucher has gone back to the other software that shows the values 'correctly' in order to process the raw files. I don't like its processing engine as much as I do C0's but it will do for this job.
Paul, I think your phrase 'C07 has improved highlight recovery' is correct but is not necessarily a good thing, especially if it is doing this automatically, without any instructions. That's why there's an HDR slider. And your phrase that 'luminance values in raw files are better regarded as relative than absolute values' is a little disconcerting. Sure I could make adjustments at the capture stage, but I don't really want to blast more light on to the background / infinity cove to get the whites to look white in C07 as I'm already having to be careful that the light 'bouncing back' to the foreground does not interfere excessively. Doing this would change the feel of the overall lighting, at least in this situation. And, yes, as you can probably tell, I still use a light meter!
I hope I don't sound like I'm being petty or difficult. It caused quite a discussion in the 'office', with two professional retouchers and two other photographers checking the files in various softwares, trying to find out what was going on. Not being able to find what was causing the issue is what has brought me here. If it is something that C07 is doing 'automatically', I would regard it as a problem. Being able to recover highlights is obviously a good thing, but only when needed.
Again, thank you for your help.
