Copy/Paste Individual Layers?

If you know you're always going to use layer(s) on multiple images:
    1. Create the [empty] layer(s) with their appropriate adjustments on one image, but don't brush a mask in—you only want the layers with their adjustment settings, not an image-specific mask. Don't make any other adjustments to the Background layer.
    2. Copy everything (Copy arrow in the upper toolbar).
    3. Paste it into your other images before you add other layers to them. You now have all of the layers on all of your images, and you can adjust as desired. Since you didn't make any adjustments to the Background layer in the original layer, you won't overwrite any Background layer adjustments in your new layers, but you WILL replace any layers those other images had. Hence pasting the layers before you create new layers in other images.
    4. If you want this to be universal, make a Preset or Style.

For example, suppose you want Burn and Dodge layers that apply, for example, 1 stop of adjustment, on all images. Just create the two layers on an unadjusted image and set the Exposure slider appropriately on each layer. Then copy the layers and paste them into your other images.

Thanks. That's kind of where I've been heading. Create a template for the first and then copy and paste to all of the images. Not the most elegant solution but better than nothing.

When working on a series of portraits I may end up with anywhere from none to three or four layers. As a finishing touch I want to apply a final Fill layer to add a preset style to all of the images. I can't figure out how to do this as copy and pasting layers only over-writes the existing layers when applied. Is there a way to copy a single (non-background) layer to multiple images? Thanks.

Today's webinar with Derek Heisler covered this sort of requirement to some extent. It should be available in the next day or two for replaying.

An alternative approach that may be worth considering, though it might depend on your images, how you work with them and what the ultimate intent of the final (prese)t style is for each set of images, would be to create the style for the final layer and save it as a style. Then add your last fill layer to each of the other images and apply the saved style to it.

Plan A1 might be to develop the style as the first thing and save it. But then copy the single layer edit to all target images. Switch it off.

Now add your other changes. Then switch the styled layer back on checking each image as you go. If you think the position of the layer in the stack makes a difference you can drag it to the top of the stack.

    Does that work for you?

    Hi guys,

I've been searching for the same answer, and it doesn't seem copy/pasting layers is possible yet. This seems like a really basic function to have, so I hope it can be added in a future update...

The situation where I needed it is the following:
I started editing the image, with 3 layers. Then I make a variant, and I add another 2 layers, total 5.
Then I make yet another variant of the original, where a spend a decent amount of time retouching.

Finally I decide I want my layers from the second variant as well... So what is the workflow here? Should I redo all the retouching work from the second variant on the first variant? Should I redo all the work of first variant to the second variant? I can't even copy the masks at least.
I think we shouldn't really have these problems in software nowdays, of re-doing a substantial amount work because we are unable to copy/paste the data that is right in front of us.
Forgive me if I'm missing an obvious workflow for this, I'd be happy to know this is already possible in 11.1.

You can: save those layers you'd like to copy from variant 1 to variant 2 as styles (or presets, if just one tool).

Right click on the Layer and select Save Settings as Style.
Select variant 2, create a new Layer
Right click on the layer, Apply Settings From > User Styles > [the style you just created]

Now that C1 focuses more and more on layers, it's time they look into improving working with layers.

    • As discussed here: copy one or more layers from 1 image to another instead of the entire set (without the 'styles' workaround — see last item).

    • After adjusting a layer's settings, update the settings of layers with the same name on other images while preserving the masks.

    • Be able to adjust transparency via keyboard shortcut (maybe already possible in v11?).

    • Be able to toggle the visibility of a layer via a keyboard shortcut (maybe already possible in v11?).

    • Be able to set a default transparency for new layers (80% as suggested in a webinar).

    • Be able to create a new filled mask via keyboard shortcut (maybe already possible in v11?).

    • Be able to copy/apply layers *regardless of image size or resolution*. If the mask doesn't fit, remove it and let us paint it again. At least, the settings are copied and I don't have to create temporary styles which I have to clean up later (or let them pollute my styles menus).

    And oh, One More Thing:

    • "Smart masks": similar to what you now can do with the color editor's "create mask", but attached to the layer itself, and with different conditions (range of luminance, hue, saturation, or the hue/saturation combo like the color editor). Cfr. LR's luminance masks or PS's "Blend if".

For now I'm sticking to v10, but I see the benefits of the 'new way'.

    Cheers,
    Peter.
