Displaying Nikon RAW images (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit SP1)
I am having trouble displaying Nikon NEF files - even before making any changes.
The unaltered NEF files render darker and more saturated in Media Pro than in NX2, or any other image-viewing software. Differences are very noticeable.
This is irrespective of whether I set the Media Rendering preferences to "Windows Imaging Content" or "Phase One," or if I set the rendering to 'Use embedded profiles' or not. I have rebuilt items after each change and installed Microsoft's recent Camera Codec Pack with RAW support.
If I open and save the NEF file with no changes (which allows for a larger embedded jpg file) it does not help either.
This is not related to the issue on this forum of Media Pro not recognising changes in the original NEF as I have not made any (though when I do these are not recognised either). Other programmes I use in (Breeze Browser, Photo Mechanic, Windows Photo Viewer) ALL produce much closer results to the original NEF file rendition. The differences are startling.
Perhaps I have not set up my preferences / colour profiling properly? Or is this related to problems Media Pro has in rendering NEF files correctly in the first place?

I am not seeing this with my Nikon NEFs. I have the same environment (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit SP1) and the newly released Microsoft Codecs. If I display a NEF in Media Pro 1.0.1 Media View (using Phase One rendering) and also open the NEF in C1 6.2.1 (all C1 adjustments reset to default) the images are identical. If I browse to the NEF folder and display the thumbnails using Windows Explorer and WIC the thumbnails are a bit darker than their counterparts in Media Pro. If I tell Media Pro to use WIC rendering and rebuild the thumbnails they get a bit darker like the browser versions.
If I open the NEF in Lightroom or ACR these applications automatically apply default brightness and contrast corrections and they look different from the unaltered NEF. I have to reset brightness and contrast to zero to get the as-shot image. I don't use NX so I don't know what it does.0 -
Thanks for the input Luke. It does seem odd and Phase One have taken this up for me and sent it on to their development team. Basically all the software renderings I generate, except the one from Media Pro, are very similar. There are subtle differences I can easily live with in cataloging software, but Media Pro seems quite off the mark. It could be to do with the high key images I was looking at, or the fact that I had manually set white balance in camera, I really don't know. Hopefully Phase One will give us some feedback. 0
