Retrofit 3.7.x?
With so many users apparently unhappy with v4.x, would it be possible to enable support of later cameras (D700 etc.) for v3.7.x?
I am very happy with the workflow, IQ from v3.7. Unfortunately it doesn't support my new Nikon D700. I find v4.5 to be too slow (lack of exp. adj. keystrokes etc).
Cheers.
Peter.

I have answered this question again but it was a while ago so I think it deserves to be answered again.
I have my self been with Phase One for a long time, back in the days before we supported 35mm cameras I was one of the few which loved working with this strange operating system called "Windows"
It should be know that probably less than 0.1% of the camera backs at this point was sold for use on Windows.
This of course is not the case today. ❗️
In 2000, "Lightphase Capture" which later was renamed Capture One only supported one camera: Lightphase.
So where am I going with this?
Well Capture One 4 has come further in 9 months (compare Capture One 4.0 with 4.5 PRO) then Capture One 2 / 3 (same platform) has done in 8 years.
You can compare 2.9.2 from 2003 (which is the oldest public available) with 3.7.8 from 2008
http://www.phaseone.com/home/content/do ... a9168a79d0
💡
Why? Well major reason is that the framework of Capture One 4 is a framework that allows us to develop new features in an unprecedented pace.
This is the "first" version of Capture One 4 PRO and yes, many things are missing, some customers think it is great, some other do not since they are missing some features that was available in the old version.
Does any one think for a minute that we are planning to ignore our customers?? 🤓
Well of course not!
Then when it come the question regarding putting newer cameras in to the old version.
It takes us many, many times longer to try to put something in to the old version which directly will affect the development of the new version.
So the answer is that we will not patch the boat that is sinking since there is no more room onboard.
Rather focus on the brand new shiny boat which has room for 100 times more people and has a much bigger engine which both can pull more weight and drive the ship faster.
The new ship is highly customizable and will allow all the old features and has also room for new!
I guess I am a techie using far to many metaphors. But I hope my point is coming across.0 -
You can't please everyone all of the time, it sounds like good business to me.
I personally really like Capture One 4.5 and consider it the only processor I would use as a substitute for the quality I can get with Cannon DPP. I like the workflow and UI enhancements. I of course, never used the 3.x version so my view is somewhat skewed.0 -

Hi, Ulf.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
I will say that the more time I spend with v4.5 the more I am liking it. However. The fact remains that v3.7.6(?) runs WAY faster on my machine (P4 3.2ghz) as well as being FAR more productive due to the use of the modifier keys (CTL,ALT, SHIFT and arrows) for core image parameter adjustments. Unfortunately I am now back to the pre C1 3.7.6 days of dreading the processing of hundreds of RAW files.
Where it would take me, in most cases, only a matter of minutes (an hour at the most!) to process a days shooting, I'm now back to spending several hours on the computer. Suddenly photography is not so enjoyable!
I will, most likely, purchase 4.5 after the demo. expires, as it still has the best IQ of any RAW converter. But, it is no longer the "Speed Demon" of 3.7.6!
I suspect the decision to NOT update camera support for earlier (proven) versions is more of a marketing strategy than a technical issue! Oh well...
Once again, thanks for taking the time to reply.
Cheers.

FWIW, V4.x is faster on my machines ..under both XP and Vista 64...so this might be an issue with your config. It's certainly not a design flaw or characteristic of the software.
I'm also going to assume that leaving something like QP's off and changing the cache protocol is done to incorporate the new features such as variations...which I think are very important AFA the future of the software.
The more I work with this software, the more I see the logic of leaving a range selected yet being able to reduce focus to one frame within that range and make individual changes when I want. Global corrections remain with the modifier key. I look forward to added workflow features, however presently...adjustments are not slower, just different. I will also say that as an initial purchaser of DSLR, PHASEOne has developed and added features far beyond the initial feature set without charging for upgrades, whereas my Adobe products during the same span have required 4 paid upgrades to keep Camera Raw current. That deserves some respect IMHO.0 -

When I refer to "speed", I am referring to the speed gained by being able to adjust image parameters (exposure compensation etc.) via keystrokes, as oppossed to using the mouse or combinations of TAB and ARROW keys, as in v4.5. Also, once v3.7.6 had finished it's initial scan/cacheing of a giving file directory, it was very quick in allowing me to move through large numbers of files via the up/down ARROW keys. V4.5 does not allow me to do this as quickly. Batch rendering speed is of no real concern to me ( 3.7.6 seemed quick enough), as I have other things to devote my time to whilst files are rendering and the turn around time for a wedding album is long enough that any moderate gain in rendering time is inconsequential to me.
As I mentioned, I too am seeing benefits to using the new version, however, I would go so far as to say there would be a very real benefit in being able to run the software in a "legacy" mode, sort of a "lite" configuration (or update the camera database for the previous version). It would seem that we all have varying approaches to work flow and I know that after a fellow wedding photographer introduced me to C1 3.7.6, I was released from the many reluctant and painful hours spent shackled to Nikon Capture and Adobe ACR!
An old adage comes to mind: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!". From my perspective, Phase One have done what so many hardware/software manufacturers have done, i.e. one step forwards and two step backwards!
Cheers.
Peter.
P.S. I hope this post is coherant! I look after my 3yo son during the day and it can be dificult maintaining one's train of thought between preparing snacks, painting pictures, toilet calls, playing "horsies" etc. 😉0 -
Peter,
I to am missing the keystroke adjustments. In the Keyboard editor there is the option of using 3.7.x keyboard shortcuts, but I think this is the Mac default set as there is no Insert for the Move too... command.
Would it be possible to have the Windows default (including Modifier keys +/-) included in the list?
Having to process upwards of 2,000 files a week the extra time 4.5 requires makes things very difficult.
