You can tether with the Nikon D7100.
It's actually quite stable thanks to it being a USB2 camera. I with it worked as well with the D800.

However live view does not work.

IF you invoke live view you get a stupid message saying that "the selected camera does not support live view".
This is total rubbish as the D7100 does support live view tethering as well as live view over WiFi with the right software.
So it's Capture One that does not support the D7100 as far as live view goes.

    Magnus.

For still life tethering you might like the Camranger.

It gives you WiFi tethering with Canon and Nikon cameras.

Very handy. You get more camera control than with Capture One and it gives you wireless live view.
This is really handy for moving around objects for still lives. You can walk unto your set with a tablet in hand and
view the composition as you move objects around on the set.

My wife uses it for her still life work.

You could use it in combination with Lightroom or Capture One by setting up a watch folder.

What is also nice is that you can get live view and image display on multiple tablets and smart phones at the same time.
