Best way to Import Large LR5 Catalogs
Despite some wonkiness I've been spending some time trying to convert to CO 7.2 ... I have one big LR5 cat with about 80,000 images which I've split into small cats containing anywhere from 8000 - 16000 to make the process more manageable but i've pretty bad luck w CO crashing before the import is complete ...
Is there a limit to how many file can be imported at one time?
Anyone care to share best practices / experience importing large archives into CO from LR?
Thanks

I have managed several imports. I think the LR import feature is still considered beta. There are few issues with imports, I have seen the exif data get imported incorrectly and CO crashing if the ref photo is missing etc.
Another option is to get LR to write out all the metadata into sidecar files and then import normally into CO. It will pick up the keywords etc from the sidecars. You won't get the (limited) adjustments that CO can import from the LR catalog but they are rarely that great anyway.0 -
I have 122000+ images that I can easily manage in Lightroom5, Extensis, iViewPro and MediaPro but I cannot ever, never, ever get a complete COPro catalog of these images.
I try to import small sections of the whole image storte, the whole thing, only certain cameras but they all fail.
I have given up on Mac as there are other better solutions. I understand that on the Windows version of COPro that this seems to work.
I cant afford to leave my main machine idle doing a catalog build for 1-2 days only for it to fall over after 36 hours with only 28000 images imported and at that point having a corrupt catalog so it is unuseable. If I could restart the process and then it continues to do the next 28K images and then aborted so i could continue until all were included it would be better but still not ideal.
However at this point I have given up in frustration/disgust.0 -
I use Lightroom of cataloging, C1 is hopeless in its present guise. 0 -

i'm pretty shocked the sw is so buggy ... would you mind expanding on your workflow? do you process raws in CO and then manage images in LR. if so do you use sessions to process and then synch folders in LR.
i really like the processing engine so i'd like to be able to incorporate somehow ...

I have recently stopped using C1 as it is just too unreliable. I'm not a full time professional photographer ( I do some paid work) so I can put up with a fair bit of hassle but how anyone can use C1 in an environment where time=money I just don't know. Perhaps this is why many professionals use a Tech to do this work, they can pass the frustration on to someone else.
I like the initial raw conversion better than Lightroom but it really isn't hard to improve the LR defaults and get close. I have raised several issues to support for C1 and nothing has really been improved.
Its just too frustrating to continue to try and use C1 for my cataloging and its too much hassle to use it for raw conversion and then import into Lightroom, so for now I'm just using LR.
I still muck about with C1 and keep an eye on this forum in the hope that one day they will fix it. Maybe Apple will buy it one day and implement the raw engine in Aperture, now that would wipe the floor with the other apps.
D800 icc profile has brown tint
TIFF files are not updated in C1 when they are edited by external app
folders won't keep their order
import can't create file names with seconds
can't export/import partial catalog
lens correction changes overall pixel dimensions
no CA analyse for x-trans files
dng support is terrible, all camera specific data is ignored
file import takes about 3-4 times longer than Aperture / Lightroom
catalog backup only backups part of the catalog system
ratings just disappear
no way to round-trip to a pixel editor like PS

I agree. I do this as well.0 -
thanks for the feedback ... unfortunately, as much as i like the processing engine C1 just isn't ready for prime time. i honestly cant imagine how anyone can possibly use it as reliable element in their work flow ... oh well. 0
