GTX 680 with 4GB ram?

I am now thinking that a GTX 670 with 4GB of ram may be a better value for 5% less performance. Is anyone running C1 with either of these cards?

I can't answer your question directly, but this might help...

I have an i7 overclocked to 3.75Ghz and 12GB of RAM. My old graphics card didn't support OpenCL so I upgraded to a GTX580 with 1.5GB. To be honest I'm not really seeing enough of an improvement in speed to justify the expense - particularly as I don't play games.

There is a knowledgebase article about what OpenCL is actually used for: and having now read that article in more depth, I think my money would have been better spent on a new SSD dedicated to my photos and Capture One data files.

In Lightroom I can locate the preview files cache on my SSD, separate from the photos which are on a traditional hard disk - I find that helps a lot with the 100% viewing performance. You don't appear to be able to do that in Capture One though...

In the last month I added two SSDs as well. One for the OS and programs and one for my paging file and the Photoshop scratch disk. I also went up to 24 GB of ram from 12 GB. I maxed out my ram because it was not very expensive to do it. Although I haven't done a lot of photo editing in the last month, the SSDs did speed up the performance a lot and it's like a new computer. C1 launches faster but I haven't noticed a difference in preview speed probably because most of my photos are on a larger and slower hard drive.

I also added a 1 TB Veliocraptor drive which I will use to put new photos on and do my processing of the images from before moving them to a larger archive drive.

I ended up ordering the GTX 670 from Amazon because of their easy return policy and I will see what the benefits are. If it doesn't speed things up I will return it. What concerns me more is the memory leak in C1 and what affect that is having on overall performance. They say they are working on a fix for that problem.

Do you see much Windows paging and Photoshop scratch disk use on the SSD with 24GB of RAM installed?
I'd always thought those where legacy hangovers from the days of 32 bit and >3GB of RAM, but I could be wrong.

Have you tried storing the photos on the SSD? - I would be keen to know if that makes a noticeable improvement to preview speed in Capture One - then I'd know what next purchase will be! 😄

I haven't tried much yet. I have been mainly researching hardware, buying, and installing it over the last three weeks. The main thing I have been trying to do in C1 is go through folders of images taken the last 3 years and deleting the images I will never use. In the upcoming weeks I will do some testing with Photoshop. I wasn't planning on using the SSD for photo storage even when processing because of the write wear issues. Maybe I will do a test in a few weeks just to see but I would rather wait and do it with new images that were just shot. I did read somewhere where Photoshop will still use the scratch disk for some operations even if you have loads of ram. I don't know for a fact if this is true. January is a good month for hardware upgrades and research since I don't shoot as much this time of year.

I've posted a few points on this subject in the Mac v7 forum. Take a look: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=13952

Thanks for the forum link Christian.

So as a regular user of the HDR panel (almost every image!) it sounds like use of my GPUs are disabled when I zoom to 100%. That's a shame, hopefully the functionality will be added soon...

Is there a link to a resource documenting any other effectors of GPU utilisation?

One thing I have noticed so far with the GTX 670 4GB is that it seems to generate the proxie files at least 50 - 75% faster than my 560 2GB card. I think it's premature to do a complete assessment because C1 still has that nasty memory hogging/releasing bug. Using Gpu-z I see it uses all the memory on the memory card and continues to use 7 - 13 GB of ram before crashing when I am just viewing and deleting files.
