Im running the top of the line i5 27" with no upgrades - straight from Apple. It has the 2GB Video.

I then bumped up the RAM after market to 32Gig.

Prior to this I had a i7 27". Had most of the same features but of course not 5K and earlier chips. CPU speed almost the same as my current i5.

My conclusion is that the i5 on the 5K with 2GB Video works well enough for the price, well enough is good, there is no noticeable lagging.. That said, if doing it again (and I might shortly then I would go i7 and 4GB Ram money permitting).

Dont mess with Fusion Drives. Just get the largest Flash/SSD you can afford. All of my photos are external Thunderbolt 1 Pegisus Raid. Im happy. I do keep my Media Pro Catalog on SSD. I do not use Catalog in C1 as its just a world of hurt. If your not hurting now, then you will be eventually.

As a 5K user, id suggest to bump the processor and GPU for sure, and get RAM from Amazon. You can keep your SSD minimum as long as you have a big extenal drive. Much cheaper this way. As an example, all my music and original RAW files are on a Raid NAS which is hooked up to a Airport Extreme. By using ac wireless band, i dont see any lag on processing or anytihng.

Hi, I need help with two items of interest.

    1. Since C1P-10 does not run on my existing iMAC (10.10.5) How can I obtain upgrade on the New iMAC about to purchase?

    2. Do I need the 4GB RAM on the graphics card or will the 2GB one be on with C1P-10?

    thanks,
    D

    1) It should be easy enough to install C1 v9 on the new iMac, then upgrade to v10. I think your license is mainly tied to your account but it may also be to your current MAC address, which obviously changes once you have a new machine. I would check directly with PhaseOne on that.

    2) I have a 4year old iMac with 2GB VRAM and v9 (still testing v10) runs fine on it (given I have OpenGL turned off). However, it's not 5K but apparently NN635399196184276250UL does run it on 5K with 2GB. Also depends on how long you intend to keep your iMac, 4GB would be a better investment for the future when software gets more demanding. As mentioned by others, I would definitely bump (max out if you can) the regular RAM, I always get mine from OWC .
