Do you have Photoshop...actually Bridge? Bridge will be exactly what you want. It is an image browser on steroids, but not great DAM software.

I did a search for "free image browser for mac" and came up with....

The problem with bridge is you have to wait for it to render every folder you want to inspect.
Then add to that bouncing around to different folders, very large ones, then come back and
render allover again. That's why that doesn't work.

I'll check out your link, thanks.

What you could do is to navigate 1 level up in your folder hierchy. Then choose in Bridge menu / Tools / Cache. Then choose 'Build and Export Cache'. Then take a cup of coffee and come back some later...
Al the thumbnails are made and you can browse and jump to them as much you like!
Trie it and you love it

Do we export it with a name?
Does that mean bridge will find the cache
it needs for a particular folder, or do we need to load it?

Maybe I ought to do that with lightroom, except no matter
how fresh the 1:1 thumbnails are in lightroom, they
    always require some loading pause.

    Just folow the instructions:

    - Open bridge
    - Navigate to the top level (so you don't proces a folder at a time but all folders in one run)
    - Then choose in Bridge menu / Tools / Cache.
    - Then choose 'Build and Export Cache'.
    - Then take a cup of coffee and come back some later...

Al thumbnails in all folders are made for you and they are ready to browse.
