Mac OS X 10.5.7 and C1 4.8 (latest eval install) - crashing
hello all, i'm a hobbyist and new to digital post processing. i just switched over to nikon digital after many years using a minolta maxxum 7 film slr as a general purpose, travel camera. i've evaluated several raw converters including aperture 2, lightroom 2, capture nx2, and bibble 4 but i'm still searching for the right app for me. C1 4 looks very promising in terms of iq, nr, and ui but after the installation and loading of several hundred raw files, i'm now experiencing frequent crashes ('quit unexpectedly'). i've uninstalled and reinstalled and cleared out preferences but still it crashes so often that it's frustrating. a few things i discovered - 1) i can make C1 4 crash after i click on a specific picture. i'll see the fuzzy version load but never to the point where it's fully rendered sharply on the screen. since C1 tries to load the last picture selected, the app will always crash when restarted. just to test, i renamed the raw file using finder and C1 proceeded to load using a different picture in the same favorites group. 2) my workflow starts with c1 and then i load the rendered jpg's into iphoto where i can create an album and post to picasa. i found that when rendering to jpg and selecting the 'embedded profile', iphoto fails to render a preview image, however, double-clicking on the black preview image does show the picture. i changed the embedded profile to srgb in c1 and iphoto proceeded to create the preview images.
questions - 1) is it possible for a specific nikon raw image file to crash C1? if i just walk away from the computer and come back after a while, sometimes the specific picture will load okay and render sharply on screen. but after working on c1 and i go back to that favorite/picture, i can consistently make c1 crash if i select that picture. perhaps it's not that specific picture but it's odd because i can consistently crash c1 when i click on that picture. 2) anybody experience the black preview in iphoto if 'embedded profile' is selected in c1 to generate the jpg?
i really would like c1 to work. i will try to submit a case online with the sample picture. i hope support will look at it even though i'm still evaluating. i've read other crashing posts so i hope they're addressing it now.
any thoughts or suggestions? thanks in advance.

Hello fellow Minolta shooter!
I had KM5D but went with Canon when Sony ate Minolta.
Welcome to the most unhappiest forum on the net. Did you feel the atmosphere here?
Yep, I have a nice collection of Canon 5D2 raw files that can crash C1 4 pro if you try to open just a single file.
Canon's own free DPP opens them nicely.
When shooting tethered with Canon 5D2 I do not have LiveView screen and cannot zoom out 10x and nail focus using MacBookPro's screen.
Canon's own free utility use LiveView to the max.
C1 4 PRO's favourite behavior is waisting your time by creating subfolders in your images folder and making various previews trying to trash to the death my MBP hard disk and using both CPUs to 100% for ever.
I suggest to open folders with no more than 10 raw images in it.
One more thing. If I try to do something else like view another photo when the processing the previous one C1 4PRO will crash with great probability.
Maybe next version will behave better?
I'm loosing my will to try...0 -
I use a Mac Pro w/16gb and have not experience your problem; and I find this version of CO1 to be pretty stable. My workflow: NEF>CO1>Tif>LR2>(CS4, or print, or webpost). I'm wondering if the problem is in the iPhoto/Picasa programs. You should try to output with CO1 to a new folder and then see if you can view those files. Then repeat with your iPhoto/picasa workflow.
Contrary to the previous poster, this is not the saddest place on the internet. CO1 has been working fine now, with some improvements to come.
This thought was going through my mind as I read your post: CO1 is for pros/advanced amateurs, while iPhoto is for basic amateurs. I looked at iPhoto when I changed over from PCs, but, never liked the program. It is fine if you want to use it to grab a few pics and make an book, but, never as part of a workflow. Again, this was my thoughts, which obviously could be biased.
Good luck in your search.0 -
hi alexey32... i do miss shooting with the maxxum 7! i would think that people posting here will typically be users with issues and i do get the sense of frustration. however, there are also very helpful people around that know their way around c1 and their input are very much appreciated. it sounds like you're encountering the same issue i am but with multiple raw files. i was able to open the same file in View NX w/o any issues. so far, out of about several hundred raw files i tested in c1, only one crashes. phase one support acknowledged the issue i'm encountering with just that one specific raw file. i sent them the logs, posted the raw file in question, and other files generated by c1. they were able to randomly duplicate the crash on their end so i feel a little better that it's not me or my system. now it's just a matter of implementing a fix which i hope they'll follow through on.
hi NN63972 - i now have a workaround for the iphoto black previews. i've seen similar issues in the iphoto forums but c1 will consistently generate a jpg that does not show properly (black previews) when imported into iphoto. my workaround in c1 is to specify the specific profile used by the camera - srgb instead of 'embedded profile' which i'm assuming should be srgb when setting up the jpg export job. i'm not sure if the issue is with iphoto or c1... i'm not familiar enough with jpg standards with respect to embedded profiles to say which is at fault. in any case, i just wanted to share what i encountered.
as for your thoughts on iphoto/c1... i agree that they address different parts of the market. i've outgrown iphoto but still use it as a conduit to picasa web albums. i don't actually pp in iphoto anymore. i use the free google uploader for iphoto to upload jpgs generated by view nx, c1, etc. to picasa.
thanks all for your input!0
