listing the files in directories
i'm going to be making quite a few changes to the way the photos in an archive [hereafter Archive X] on a local server are organized and i've had the thought that it could be very helpful to have a record of the way it was arranged before i start messing with it.
i'm talking about the names of catalogs and folders. it would be good to have it down to the item [in this case mostly jpegs] level.
i tried copying and pasting items from column view [in the finder] into a spread sheet. pretty problematic as soon as you get a few layers deep.
considered making a series of screen shots but but it would be a lot of screen shots and difficult to organize and access.
my Technical Services Department's solution is to make a copy of Archive X but at 2TB+ this would be unwieldy and i don't want the actual images, just their file names.
i'm using a Mac. any ideas? wonder if there's way to do this w/ UNIX?

A simple listing of all images in a selection can be done with the Make option in the Menu.
than you can choose the fields you want in your listing, only name for example.
You can choose the output (Plain text/Unicode and Tab-seperated/comma separated).
choose than 'Make' and the location you want to drop this file. Open it in Word or Excel...
A usefull help maybe is the Script (from menu) / Annotate / Keywords from folders. In that way the present folder structure can be preserved for future use.
Another tip i can give is to read 'the DAM book for photographers' from Peter Krogh. In the second edition a whole chapter is dedicated to 'Migrating Disorganized Digital Files to an Organized Archive Structure'.
