Why is DB not allowed to process Canon or Nikon

    I think the Pro licence only comes with a value added kit and if you have the standard warranty kit you only get C1DB.

    I agree it is a little mean if you buy a new standard kit but if you rent, or buy second hand then I agree it should be a paid upgrade.

    I don't understand spending 20k plus on a back and being asked to pay another 400-600 for the same software where if you buy one you need to buy both to mix cameras.

    If anyone knows for sure I'd love to know why....

    I agree with you (though I don't use a Phase DB), but just FYI I received yesterday an email with this link/offer:… a much cheaper price!

    PS I have zero connection with this company, I just forward the info…

    Hi, I saw that coupon too, but I feel that I paid over 20k and although I have the DB license and it works, it reminds me why I stopped using C1 Pro when it went to 4.0 I paid 450 for 3.7 when it went to 4.0 they wanted more then I bought the back now they want another 200-450.00 I have to draw the line. I don't like certain aspects of the software to begin with so I don't care but as usual, it sucks for my clients.

    If Canon ever comes out with 28 or more mega, I'll never go back to Phase or Leaf.

    But you'll probably then buy Capture One anyway, right?

    There always is a bit of confusion when it comes to the Product Keys unfortunately, but since we've upgraded to Capture One 6 the system has standardized. As Gareth pointed out the PRO software is free with the Value Added warranty and the DB software is the alternative for ANYONE to use at no cost when shooting with or editing Phase One RAW files. If you purchased your Phase Back with a Classic warranty, at a substantial savings, one of the limitations is that we do not include the PRO software. Since there are quite a few users of Capture One that don't shoot with or own Phase One systems, but need tethered capabilities with Canon/Nikon we can't very well make the FREE version of the software meet the needs of users that haven't purchased any Phase One Products, hence the difference between PRO and DB.

    In regard to the PRO Keys;
    The original standard PRO keys allow for activation from Version 1 through 5, so your key is valid to activate 6 years of PRO software at no additional cost. The other standard Capture One 3 PRO Keys allowed for activation of Capture One PRO 3, 4 and 5 (covering roughly 4 years of software releases). Of course there are keys that were atypical, made for promotions or custom orders so the above doesn't apply to all but certainly does apply to the majority.

    Currently, if you would like to use Capture One 6 PRO with any PRO Key purchased pre December 2010 (Capture One 6 release), the upgrade path is only $99/€69 and upgrades will always be allowed so we would never ask you to purchase a whole new key (at "400-600") just to use the updated version.

    In regard to your specific key, and other original standard PRO keys like it from Capture One Version 1 (circa 2004), there was no upgrade cost for about 6 years. I know paying for upgrades is always a nuisance but given the alternative software options, a flat software price for 6 years of improvements seems like a steal. If you're currently using a DB version of the software, create a support case and we can show you where to find your PRO key and how to upgrade it for Capture One 6 PRO if you so choose, or you can use Capture One 5 PRO at no cost as the PRO Key you got in 2004 is still valid to activate that software 😉

    In addition to Drew's post above and to temper a bit my own post, I'd like to add that I know that developing a software for a specific camera (i.e. Canon, Nikon etc…) is a real bunch of work.
    Someone has to pay for it… (I gladly paid for the update from V3 to V6).
    Yes you paid for your back and got a DB version of C1 for free, but if you consider buying a Porshe (or a Ferrari;) would you be awaiting to have a free maintenance for your Renault? (or Fiat;)
    As for giving up with DB for a 28 MP Canon, I doubt that you get the same quality of files…

    By the way Drew, I'm ok to pay (not too much!) for an upgrade of C1 handling my Pentax 645D PEF files (yes, I know that DNG is handled).
    Sorry to the OP for the "off topic", but I couldn't resist… 😎

    Thanks for your reply.... Everyone can run their company their own way, I totally don't agree but I'm not knocking you for it I was just ranting. I did pay full for the db and c1 pro 3. series licenses and the back of course.

    And if you would like to use your current Capture One PRO key to activate Capture One 6 PRO, you can upgrade it below;

    C1 DB is free to Phase One back users and has exactly the same functions as the Pro version. IMO it's much better to pay (peanuts) for upgrades (when not using a Phase One back) and get good quality software than us all ending up using something mediocre.

    C1 initially has a bit of a learning curve especially if coming from the much adored version 3 but once you've got used to the interface, it soon becomes apparent what a quality piece of software it it. It has its problems but what software is 100% perfect and just think the €69 or $99 goes towards making it better and better with each upgrade.
