Capture One 4.6 deleting files to trash
I downloaded the 4.6 upgrade for Capture One a couple of days ago and used it for the first time today. On the positive side, it is much snappier in handling Canon 50D files than was 4.5.1; however, I'm encountering a problem. When I try to send a file to the trash (either with the trash button near the top of the screen or by right clicking and selecting "delete"), about once in every 3 or 4 times, I get an error message saying that the file could not be deleted because it is being used by another program. A second attempt to delete the same file will generally work, but it is a pain to have to do the procedure twice to get the file deleted.
Has anyone encountered the same problem or does anyone know a solution?
Thanks much,
Les

I'm also finding that the settings files (*.cos) are not always being deleted in 4.6 when I use delete permanently. This is a problem when using an external renaming program since I like to use sequential numbering. I started using delete permanently because 4.5 sometimes would re-create the preview files after deleting to trash. The extra confirmation added in 4.6 is also a bit tedious after awhile. 0 -
I use 4.6.24 version on Win XP, Capture One never send images to trash, indeed delete from disk directly without giving any error message.
I've not had the issue with previous versions.

I did some 'deletion for fun' with copied images (CO 4.6 / WinXP SP3). Image file names are like 'PS090105-008.CR2'
CO4 has 3 delete functions:
1. Trash (moving image to trash folder of your session)
2. Delete Permanently (fully erases the selected images from disk)
3. Empty Trash Folder (if you did (1) first, result as in (2))
Note that the Windows recycle bin is not used in the process.
1. Trash
One confirmation. Sometimes error occurs and settings file is not moved to Trash folder.
Error text: Cannot move file: The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name.
2. Delete Permanently
Two confirmations (2nd is Are you sure). Sometimes error occurs and settings file is not deleted from capture subfolder.
Error text: Cannot delete file: The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name.
3. Empty Trash Folder
No confirmation (which is weird to me!). An exception is when you view the Trash folder, select image(s) and use the trash button or Delete command: it will be handled as a Delete Permanently command. Sometimes error occurs but all files are deleted from trash folder and subfolders.
Error text: Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.
I have not experienced inconsistency in behavior described above regarding use of button, menu or shortcut key.
I will contact Phase One support to request to look into it. Also, a confirmation for Empty Trash would be welcome IMO, in particular in comparison with the Delete Permanently double confirmation.0 -

What I'm seeing is similar to what you describe in 1 and 2 above, except, like I said above, the message I get is that the file could not be deleted because it is being used by another program. I have nothing else running on the machine at the time I'm using Capture One. I don't even open PhotoShop until I'm done with my conversions.

Thank you for your reply. Regarding the 'nothing else is running' this is often the hardest to determine. Antivirus comes to mind. However, it seems to be an error handling and condition related to CO 4.6 itself. Nice debugging task for the PO guys & girls. 😉0 -
Subsequent to my last reply, I've done some poking around and discovered something else that I'm assuming is related. When I am able to successfully delete a file (either with the trash button at the top or with the delete after right clicking), I can't figure out where that file is going. It is not in the operating system trash and it is not in the Capture One deleted items folder. When I do a Windows search for the file, it comes up empty, too. So, unless I'm missing something, it must be permanently deleting the file.
I'm not sure where this information fits in, but any input would be appreciated.
And yes, my anti-virus program is running all the time.
Thanks,

Les,
Thank you for allowing to quote myself 😉
Indeed, the Windows recycle bin is not used. Trashing should MOVE the file to the trash folder. Best to open the trash folder from the session folders in Library in case you do not recollect which folder is assigned the trash folder to. If the trashed file is not there, there is really something wrong.
Only the Delete Permanently function should fully and radically erase the image (including its preview and settings file) from your disk, as does Empty Trash.0 -

Paul,
Thanks much for your replies.
2 things.
First, with version 4.5.1, if I used the trash button at the top of the page, it moved the picture to the Windows recycle bin. At least that is my recollection. On the rare occasions when I wanted to restore a deleted photo, I'm fairly certain I went to the Windows recycle bin. I also thought that, if you used "delete", then it was sent to the CO trash.
In any case, regardless of whether I'm using the trash button or "delete", I can't find the picture in either the Windows recycle bin or in the CO trash, and, yes, I did go to the session folders in Library. When I click on trash, it just says that there are no images in that folder. Also, like I said before, when I did a Windows search for the file that I deleted, the file was not found anywhere.
Like I said, I'm more confused now than before.

A couple of additional points.
First, I tried disabling my anti-virus software, and that made no difference.
Also, when I installed 4.6, I just installed it over 4.5.2. Is there any point to trying to uninstall Capture One and then doing a clean install of 4.6?
Finally, I installed 4.6 on both my desktop and laptop computers, and I'm seeing the same issue on both.

Paul,
In looking further to try to figure out what is going on, I looked more carefully in the Capture One 4 user manual. There, it says that deleted pictures are sent to the trash folder in the session folders only for Capture One 4 Pro. I don't have Pro. For the standard version, the deleted pictures are supposed to be sent to the Windows recycling bin. That is the way it worked for me with 4.5.1. With 4.6, though, I have no idea where they are being sent because it isn't the recycling bin. As I said above, I think they are being permanently deleted because they don't show up when I do a Windows search for the deleted files. I'm guessing, also, that this is related to the error message that I get every third or fourth time I try to delete a picture. Since I'm seeing exactly the same thing on both of my computers, I don't imagine that the problem is in the computer.

Les,
Thanks for the update. I indeed tested with CO 4.6 Pro yesterday, I today reworked deletion testing with CO 4.6 (regular). I got the same results regarding trashing (moving to trash folder) and delete permanently. However, no error messages appeared today. I already discussed the issue with Phase One yesterday in a support case. Although they were not able to reproduce the issue, they will look into it anyway.
The manual is misleading and not updated to 4.6 in this respect. Thanks for pointing that out. I will add the manual update to the same support case today.
To cut a long story short, the non-Pro version should work in the same fashion as Pro/DB regarding moving to trash or delete permanently. Note that the non-Pro version also works with a session, although only one (default) session. From 4.6 onwards, I believe still that the OS trash can or recycle bin is not used. I will try to get confirmation about that from Phase One and let you know when I receive a reply.0 -
Hello,
I am currently working on a support case that was submitted by Mr. Steunebrink and would like to request that Les and Tom also create support cases. As it stands, this forum post and Mr. Steunebrink case are the only reports of this issue so details are few and far between. It seems like this issue is not a universal problem and so we will need specific information about your computer in order to proceed with further investigation.
I apologies to hear that this error is slowing your workflow but we will look further into the issue through the support system so that we can try to find the common thread.0 -

Drew,
I have established a support case. I'm not sure if that is the one that you are working on.

Paul,
Thanks much for your efforts.
Here is an update of what I've learned.
Per the request of support in the support case I established, I was asked to set the trash folder to some arbitrary folder. When I did so and when I tried to delete files they were, in deed, sent to that arbitrarily set trash folder. Further, when I clicked "empty trash", they were then permanently deleted.
Somehow, inadvertently, I ended up later setting the desktop as the arbitrary trash folder. When I then clicked "empty trash", it ended up deleting everything on my desktop. I ended up having to do a system restore (3 times) to get the desktop back before I figured out what what going on. Then, what I did was created a new folder that I desigated as "trash", and I set CO to use that folder with trash. Now, I can delete pictures to that folder and empty it by clicking on "empty trash". I'm not sure whether I've discovered a permanent solution or whether it is just a workarouond, but, at least, I can now send pictures to a trash location where, if I need to, I can recover them. And, thankfully, I think I'm done inadvertently permanently trashing everything on the desktop.

Because, as I've been discovering what is going on, the thread has gone in different directions, I thought it might make the situation clearer if I summarized:
1. I first discovered that, when I wanted to delete a photo using 4.6, every 3rd or 4th time, I got an error message saying that the file could not be deleted because it was being used by another program (even though no other programs were open).
2. Subsequently, I discovered that, when I was deleting a photo (either with the trash can icon or by right clicking and selecting delete, it was not being sent to either the Windows recycle bin or to a CO trash folder. Instead, it was being permanently deleted. The same two issues were occuring on both of the computers on which I have CO 4.6 installed.
3. I then figured out that, if I created my own trash folder (I used the same drive that I use for photos), I could then right click on that folder and assign it to be the trash folder. After doing so, now when I delete a photo, it goes to that trash folder, and, if I need to recover it, I can do so by moving it back to the original photo.
My guess is that others have not reported the same issue only because they have not yet had need to try to recover a photo that has been deleted. There is no question that, without doing my workaround, selecting delete is permanently deleting the photo. And, at present, the only way I can see that a deleted photo can be recovered is to, as I did, create a trash folder of your own and assign it to be the Capture One trash folder. Assuming that others may also find that, when deleting a file, it is being permanently deleted and not sent to a trash folder, I would suggest setting up a trash folder and assigning it as the place to which trash be sent. Otherwise, it is only a matter of time before you are going to need to recover a deleted picture and find that it has been permanently deleted.
Further, when setting up a trash folder, make sure that it is a dedicated trash folder with nothing else in the same folder because, when you click "empty trash", everything in that folder gets deleted.
Also, as reported above, with 4.6, the Windows recycle bin is completely being bypassed.

Les,
Thanks for the summary. Is clear. Please note that the trash function (move to trash) has always been working fine on my WinXP test system with CO 4.6.
In ran some tests with both 4.6/4.6Pro and was able to reproduce the errors mentioned before with high predictability.
There are two conditions that seems to lead to file errors during deletion.
- the errors only occur when 'Edit Primary Variant Only' is NOT set, i.e. the button is gray.
- the errors only occur when the settings (.cos) file is just created, moved or written to by CO 4.6.
I enforced the latter condition by opening a set of files with existing preview files but without settings files. This is the status after opening new images but before adjustments. Next, I made a single adjustment to one image, moved to the next image (making CO write a .cos file to disk) move back and delete. This resulted in the error reported before. The same occurs when I go to the trash folder, select an image, wait a few seconds and empty the trash.0 -

Paul,
Thanks much for your continued investigation and efforts.
1. I tried to see if I could reproduce what you found when you said that the error message upon pressing delete came only when it was to a file that had adjustments applied to it. On neither of my two computers was I able to reproduce what you said. My desktop computer is the one on which I created my own "trash" folder. The laptop is still set up the way that 4.6 came installed. On neither one was I able to see a connection between the error message and whether or not a file had adjustments applied to it.
2. I also find it interesting that, on your system, deleted files are actually being sent to the trash folder in the sessions folders. Again, on my desktop computer, when I deleted a file, it was definitely being permanently deleted and not sent to the trash folder until I created my own trash folder and set CO to use that for trash. On the laptop computer, which, again, is still set up without my creating my own trash folder, when I delete a file, it is still permanently deleting it. Not only is the sessions trash folder empty, but, if I do a Windows search for the deleted file, the search comes up empty.
Thus, it is a mystery to me why your set up is working differently than either of my two computers. As I explained above, at least I seem to have found a temporary solution by creating my own trash folder and sending the deleted files there, and that gives me some comfort in knowing that, if I need to retrieve a deleted file, I can do so. I'm also glad that I discovered that the deleted files were being permanently deleted before I deleted a file that I needed to retrieve.

I had the same issue in 4.5.1, if I right clicked delete a thumbnail I would at times get the error that the file was in use. If I waited for all of the thumbs to repaint I would not have the issue. Or, if I deleted thumbs from R to L across my screen there was nothing being painted to the screen and I never had the issue. 0 -
Les, thank you for sharing your solution.
I have the same problem as you. Today i'm deleted 10 files while selecting files with my model. Gladly i have 2 auto backups for it.
Also i found what button "Edit primary only" makes more questions than solutions - when it on, it applying adjustments for all selected pictures instead of primary, and when it off, CO deletes all selected files, instead of primary.
I'm disappointed with CO4 for the first time...0
