Tethering just not working
Hey everyone -
I'm *really* trying to like CO7. I'd love to buy it because I love the iOS app part of it. But tethering with a Canon 5D3 is just not possible it seems.
First is the ongoing Mountain Lion issue. The hack 'sort of works', meaning it will work for a little bit, and then CO7 will lock up while image transfer is "Pending".
To work around this, I created a separate Mac partition, installed 10.7.3, and reinstalled the 7.0.1 trial. Still, here, I get a lock up with the Pending graph not moving pass the first segment. I thought this was supposed to work with 10.7 except from 10.7.5 on?
I'm using the cable that came with the camera, which is about 2 feet.
Where am I going wrong here? Do I need to have the latest EOS utility installed on 10.7.3 to get it to work. So frustrated.

Thanks - I tried that and it still ran into problems.
Here's what I'm thinking (and please correct me if someone has this working) : There's a problem with a 5D Mark 3 connecting via the EOS Utility. Here's how I tested it:
New, fresh install of 10.7.4
Installed the EOS Utility, 2.12.3
The utility saw the camera fine, and JPGs were transferred fine as well. Once I switched to RAW, I got the same amount of progress on the blue bar that I see in CO7 with the 'Pending' graph. So, it appears that it's an EOS Utility thing that's hanging on RAW transfers from a 5D3.
My next test was to downgrade EOS Utility to the version that came with the camera (2.11.1). This got me a little farther - I could get 2 or 3 files before I got the same 'stuck' bar. To test again, I connected a 5D2 in the same scenario (EOS Utility 2.11.1). No problems whatsoever.
Is anyone out there having success tethering with a 5D3? If so, can you tell me your exact OS X version and EOS Utility version?
Thanks!!!

The more tests I do, it looks like the 5D2 is fine transferring full RAW files over USB. The 5D3 will get a couple transferred (depending on whether I connect the USB cable to the laptop or the display that's connected). Eventually it gets hung.
If anyone has had success tethering a 5D3 over USB on a Mac, please let me know your version numbers so I can try it!

After reading some more, I took some advice from another post here and picked up a powered USB hub. This may have done the trick. The 5D3 seems to reliably transfer RAW files now in both the EOS Utility and Capture One. I get the basics of why this might have been necessary, but still it seems weird - I was originally using a cable that came with the camera that was less than 2 feet. Not sure how it could have had a problem transmitting the image. Perhaps the problem was with the USB port on the Mac (Macbook Pro, Mid 2010).
So, if you are having problems, try a powered USB hub.
