Converting to DNG
Hello,
Is it possible to convert files to DNG on import or afterwards without having to export as DNG then re-import.
Thanks.

Not that I know of. But why do you want to? Can we suggest some other way of achieving your aim?

I was reading a debate over DNG vs RAW a few years ago. I won't bother opening up the conversation here. Suffice it to say, RAW is fine. I was really just wondering if it was possible for continuity since I just migrated from LR where my files were converted to DNG in import.

I'm sure Ian will come back on this one but the somple answer is "No".
Simple reasons I think.
Firstly Adobe, and the DNG standards creator and guardian probably have some special interest in the format that it makes sense for them to promote by supporting it.
Secondly although LightRoom (AFAIK) is a little different, many of the RAW file interpreter programs are pretty much stand alone in that they take a RAW file, interpret it and then save the result in a new format - such s DNG or TIFF or PSD, etc to provide maximum data to play with after the RAW file has delivered its content. This is basically a "develop" process in good old darkroom terminology.
Capture One, on the other hand, is able to always work from the data in the original RAW file. Thus the need for a high quality intermediate file that interprets the RAW data does not exist as an absolute 'must do'. And at that point one might wonder whether conversion on import is a useful feature.
It may be and for some users it might be a key part of their operation but in the main it is a less compelling need to convert and abandon the RAW data for C1 than might be promotable for LR (for example.)
This does not really help you to achieve your continuity objective but perhaps goes some way to explaining the way things are.
HTH.

Your are correct in that I am coming from Lightroom and it was in their forum that was reading about RAW vs DNG. I was just starting with photography and at the time probably a little too concerned with the technical aspects of RAW converters and opinions. Continuity was a desire, not a must and knowing what I know now I can let it go.
I appreciate the detailed response and all the responses you've posted to this forum. I've learned a lot and you and the others who have contributed have made my migration to Capture One a lot smoother. Thanks, Grant.

Michael,
You are very welcome and many thanks for your thanks. Much appreciated.

Rather than importing and then exporting as DNG, it would probably be quicker to run your files through Adobe's own DNG converter first. 0 -
But there´s DNG mentioned in the export dialogue drop down (and in recipes) as well? I must admit not to know what for (except the details mentioned earlier here), but …?
Kind Regards,
