How to get Clone and heal to show result
How to get Clone and heal to show result
I watch the tutorial and I set up a layer and option clicked the spot to clone and painted the area in red.
However I cannot get the clone to be accepted.
Trying not to watch the video again and hoping someone can tell me what I need to do?
Obviously I am missing something or need to hit a accept button.
Thanks
greg

Did you change the layer type from adjustment to clone?
Ian0 -
Switch off diplay of the mask and the result will show. 0 -
Sorry, this is not exactly a follow up to the original question but it got me wondering. What's the difference between clone and heal and spot (dust)?
Are they used for different purposes?0 -
Maggie
The spot tool can be used to remove small blemishes on the subject such as a pimple on the model's chin or a small unwanted part of the subject, such as a distant bird in the sky (if it looks small in the frame). The dust tool does the same for artefacts seen on the image as a result of dust on the camera sensor. You can remove a large number of spots or dust specks in the background layer of the image.
See here and here for use of the spot tool.
The clone and heal tools are for use in removing larger blemishes. For example, I had a picture of some street wall art recently and was able to use this to hide a crack in the wall. I also used this to remove a fallen leaf from a path. But these must be done in a separate layer, and you are limited to one clone or heal per layer.
And here is a post about the clone and heal layers.
Hope that helps.

Thank you Ian. Makes perfect sense.0 -
Thanks for the info.
I just saw everything and will check it out.
For some reason I am not getting the response notices via e-mail.
I will have to ask in the General forum as to what i am not doing correctly.
I get the updates from Phase one on products so the e-mail address is correct.
Happy Holidays to all

I guess I am just plain stupid !!!!!!!!!!!

What does that mean?
Where is the mask or what is it called in the real world. ?????
How do you shut it Off ?????
I paint the area and switch to Background, nothing.
I hit the - (minus) icon everything goes away.
I use "Use Pen Pressure" is that the one to use?
On another note:
I really wish the spot tool was useful for more then a small blemish and that it could be dragged to remove a line not just a single spot, the software guys should really look at the Spot tool (retouch) in Aperture for the repair and clone and how ease of use it is.0 -
There are three settings when you paint a mask, to always show the mask, to show it only when painting, or never to show it. You can tell which you have it set to by what happens when you paint. If the red masked area still shows after you have stopped painting it's "always show", if it goes away when you stop it's "only when painting", and if it never shows, - well you get the idea. You change this by clicking and holding the paintbrush icon and you will see those options.
(And did you check on what I asked you in a previous post that you have the layer set to Clone or Heal, and not to Adjustment?)

Yes, I had it in heal.
Yes I tried turning off the Mask and the red lined area went away BUT the change was not made.
Correct me if I am wrong but does the Heal replace similar to a clone?
I also tried the clone and got the same results IOW's the red stayed when I hit the "Never show Mask" the change was not made. I even went over past my intended fix to make sure and there are no changes.0 -

Could it be that the pick point for the data to use for healing and the anchor point for the position of the mask are the same? In other words you are trying to "Heal" with the same image information you wish to "correct" by "healing"?
You should see an orange circle and a white circle with a white arrow attached pointing to the orange circle.
Or perhaps the Opacity of the mask is set to a very low value?
If neither of those is the possible cause then it's not immediately obvious what else to suggest - unless the layer is not ticked to be active.

Sorry to respond so late but I do not get notices when someone replies to my post.
I have the box checked.
I have asked on the forum, 17 views but no response.
So I redid everything and I can get the heal to work, HOWEVER it is all wrong.
See below answers :

What is the purpose of the line ?
I what to change the color of a small portion of the image from red to white.
The line draws from the white spot to the black background WHY?
I am using the smallest size brush "5" and trying to click on the white of an eye and remove some of the red in the corner of the eye.
I option click the white area and I draw the area to be white and I hit the background mask to see the results and what I want to be white is black which is what the color of the other end of the line WHY?
You should see an orange circle and a white circle with a white arrow attached pointing to the orange circle.
It is a black circle and the line is black not white, I cannot tell if there is a circle on the other end as it is in the black background.
Or perhaps the Opacity of the mask is set to a very low value?
Opacity 100, hardness 50

I have NO idea what "Ticked" means
I cannot help but be frustrated, again, why a line with 2 ends ?0 -
Perseverance
I figured it out, still think it is a idiotic way to do it.
I am not consistence though, sometimes exactly what I want to be cloned is done and sometimes an entire area of the picture that I do not want is cloned.
Since I am going to treat myself as totally naive, how does Phase One classify the difference between Heal and Clone?
In Aperture, Clone is a full removal of the area from the original to the target area.
The heal is called repair which tends to blend the area surrounding the targeted area.
Thanks for your patience0 -

I have posted twice and it is not showing, This is a test !

What I have come to understand.
(1)
The Arrow, I understand how it works, the to and from.
However, the issue that is driving me nuts is how to clone an area in a small location.
IOW's the donor area is too close or right next to the receiving area.
The color is totally different and the spot tool does not always remove the color entirely.
(2)
What is the difference between the Heal and Clone brush?
(3)
Still not getting the notices for the Forum.
Thanks,
Greg0 -
1. If you are working with almost no separation between source and target to be changed life is always going to be tricky.
2. Clone copies directly from the target area subject only to blending opacity, etc. Heal will attempt to do some smart blending of its own to delivery a more subtle result - if it can.
3. As far as I know forum response notifications are not activated. This may be a good thing for one's time management.
HTH.

Regarding #1 I am both shocked and disappointed, I cannot believe that this program which seems to be on a higher more professional level then Apple's Aperture would have such a needed repair difficult if not impossible to attain.
With Aperture, The Clone and Repair (a combination of CO8's Heal and spot) is extremely easy and effective.
Unbelievable !
Thanks for the other info.
Without a workable Clone and Heal, I will have to shelve this program and stay with Aperture.
I will continue to educate myself with it with the anticipation that in the near future they will fix the Heal and Clone. After all this is the first time they made it available.
The spot is also an issue in tight places, not being able to remove the circles so that the area can still be worked on is problematic for me.
Thanks Again, Happy New Year,

I have yet to find a "Heal" solution that full proof easy to use in all situations although I can't comment on Aperture since I don't work with Macs.
Last time I looked at the LightRoom solution it seemed to do exactly what they claimed it would do - make something up out of the surrounding data. Sometimes it worked well enough, other times not - at least for the things I tried with it.
How difficult something is to remove very much depends on the complexity of that section of the image. A mass of foliage? Likely not a problem. Blemishes in a sky? Probably resolvable. Remove an object from in front of a brick wall? Perhaps not so easy to get the replacement brickwork to line up and look "right" if one is being critical. The usual approach, if available, would be to use a shot of the same scene without the object in the way and layer it in - a Photoshop type solution rather than a C1 solution and something that can be applied to the output file just as effectively as the it can form the RAW conversion - perhaps more so.
I'm not sure what your comment about the colour being different is referring to.
