Hierarchical Keywords: to use or not to use?
Hello,
Our small field office is migrating to Media Pro from Pica Jet and Media Expressions 2. It may not be the last stop on the DAM train for our larger organization as a whole, so I don't want to get too settled in this time around.
In Pica Jet we used tag/keyword hierarchies. When our IT staff at the organization's headquarters helped us migrate to Media Expressions 2, we lost this hierarchy structure and all keywords turned flat. As I migrated from Expressions to Media Pro, the keywords remain flat. In trying to prepare to launch Media Pro to our office, I wonder if I should create a new hierarchy or not. I've done research within this forum and all over the internet all day, and I still can't tell what's better.
My general questions about Hierarchical Keywords:
1. If I use a default vocabulary within my catalog, why don't the HK's I just created become a part of the vocabulary?
2. Is there a way to incorporate all old keyword assignments into the Keyword Hierarchy I just created? Or, is there
a way to nest all my old keywords within an existing hierarchy structure?
3. When you create a keyword hierarchy in Media Pro, does it write new HK assignments to IPTC?
4. Do keyword hierarchies transfer well to other programs? I don't know where our organization will take us next in terms of DAM. Or would it be better to play it safe and keep my keywords flat for now?
Thanks for any information you can provide!

Hi, as far as I know neither AFP, Alamy, Rex Features or Getty are using HK in their images. Hence I suggest keep them flat. The trend seems to be for other criteria, such as prientation, number of people in the image, day or night, dominant colours. 0 -
There is no IPTC standard for hierachical keywords so each program is different in how it writes them and also how it handles them from a different program if it handles them at all. Lightroom recognises MP hierachical keywords in a fashion and vice versa.
There is nothing to stop you using MP hierachical keywords and just writing them as a flat to the files.0 -
Thanks to you both for your advice. [quote="Paul Silk" wrote:

How would I do this?
Also, can anyone share ideas about hierarchical keywords and default vocabularies, or about simple ways to transfer all images with an old tag to a new hierarchy (Questions 1 and 2 in my original post)?0 -
When migrating from Expression Media the hierachical keywords must come along. Didn't they?
How did you migrate?
