Nikon NEF color adjustment
Hi, I am busy trying out Capture One and am having trouble with the color appearing to be off when compared with the Nikon Capture ND-X software. The bottom left is the JPG generated by Capture ONE, which looks exactly like the NEF looks in Capture ONE. The top image is one generated by Nikon's Capture ND-X and looks exactly like the NEF file looks in Capture ND-X.
Is there any setting I need to make to get the color to look like it looks in the Nikon software ?

Hi,
First, I would say that PERSONNALLY, I prefer the Capture One version, the Nikon Capture ND-X NEF and generated jpeg being too much saturated to my eyes.
But, the question is : do you apply a setting on shooting with your Nikon (portrait, landscape, etc..) ? If yes, as those settings are not taken into account by Capture One, that could explain the difference.0 -
I think the original Nikon is a more accurate representation of the actual color - the sea had a sharp dark blue color and not the greenish tinge shown in the Capture One image. Still it's proving difficult to reproduce that same color in Capture One - but then I am not an expert and RAW adjustment. 0 -
To know what to suggest the starting point would be to know what the existing process settings are and what any export/ process settings might be.
That would quite a lot of detail.
For BOTH applications - C1 and the Nikon software.
As for "colour at the time" memory .... speaking personally I have learned to never trust mine but we are not all equal in that area of brain power processing.

OK, I just found the Nikon Picture Control Utility and it seems they have a bunch of presets that get applied and presumably get used by their software. They specifically mention that 3rd party software may not recognise these an apply them so I am assuming C1 does not apply them.
Also I found that their NEUTRAL preset looks just like the image shown in C1 - so presumably has no presets applied.
So I guess now to figure out what those Nikon presets are and how to recreate them in C1. I am hoping they are just a standard set of adjustments that could be applied by C1 rather than some more complex logic implemented programatically.
If anyone has any idea where or how I can find out what the Nikon preset settings are please let me know. I am thinking of saving the same image with each of the presets and then trying to figure out what the exact adjustments are for each. Not really sure that will work though.0 -
If you like the Nikon software results what stops you using it?
Try some of the included styles as well as the different options for the Curve in the Base Characteristics tool.
When you find settings that are quite close to the Nikon results the styles will give you some or all of the settings you need or at least get you close to what you prefer and you can then modify whet there is and save it as your own user style.

There is a powerful software to get the results you expect, but you need to learn how to work with it, and it is not free. Its name is 3DLUT Creator.
But, if you are more comfortable with Capture One, you can try to play with the color editor, which is very good, and save the corresponding settings as an ICC profile.0 -

Mmm, would be nice to be able to import the Nikon presets. Sadly the preset export is a binary file.
Capture ND-X doesn't do organisation, classification and storage like Capture One. It's also buggy and slow but can't fault its RAW editing so I would prefer to use Capture One. Aperture was great but hey...
Is there any way to show focus points in Capture One ? This seems to not work for NEF files either or am I just imagining that this should be possible?0 -
Have you already found a solution? I have the same problem with the white balance of CO. The automatic white balance always contains too much yellow. 0 -
Focus point display for Nikon is not yet supported in Capture One.
I have submitted a feature request at the time of CO 9 and I would suggest you doing this as well as it might help to raise the priority.0
