Pentax 645Z DNG
I am about to buy the Pentax 645Z
Can anyone confirm that even if not officially supported
Capture One 8 will open the DNG files from the camera
Thanks in advance

They open even in 7 but dont look good actually look terrible. I would test that camera extensively before purchase its good but not great. It has a lot of gotcha's. 0 -

If you go for a Pentax 645Z you will not be able to use C1. You should also expect slow operation (especially when shooting bursts), only rudimentary tethering workflow, no leaf shutter lenses (there are 2 old ones but they are manual focus and not very good quality) and a generally anemic/mediocre quality of lenses. Have you checked out a Phase One or Mamiya Leaf? There are packages not that much more than a Pentax 645Z + Lens kit.
(I'm obviously very biased as I work at Digital Transitions, a Phase One dealer, but regardless just make sure you extensively test the system you invest time and money into no matter what that system is)0 -
It is possible to open Pentax 645z raw files in Capture One 7 with a work around.
Using an exif editor you can change the camera model parameter from Pentax 645z to IQ250.
The Raw files will then open on Capture One.
Both cameras use the same sensor.
You can shoot a test target and then tweak the results and save them to use on your Pentax 645z files.
To a certain extent this can be done with other cameras too.
Same thing works for Nikon d8100
There is no technical obstacle to Capture One supporting Pentax 645z raw in Capture One. It is a choice by Phase One to not support the Pentax 645z0 -
I am in shock!!!
CO8 imports the DNG file from the 645z but doesn't read them!!!
Yes I know that CO doesn't support Pef from the Pentax 645 cameras
but In the camera spec support phase one state that they support DNG 1.2
so it must be a bug, right?
Other wise It would unacceptable !!
Thanks

Been through this with Phaseone, they will not support any MF camera other than Mamiya and Phaseone. Does not mater if your file is converted to DNG, they see the EXIF info and block the reading.
Want to see it read it, use a exif editor and find the 645Z and change it to 645Q, CO7&CO8 will read the file. Done this to look at a 645Z raw files from a dog and pony show about the 645Z.
I don't understand other than Phaseone does not want to allow apples to apples comparison of their MF cameras to anyone else. To me, I would jump into bed with both Hasselblad and Pentax on their MF cameras, I know the market is small, but then they could say we have the best Raw converter.
Robert
(P.S. and also make money from the other MF users.)0 -
I bought it!!!!
Spent the all day yesterday testing the camera(unfortunately using LR)
It's a great Dslr, a clear step forward in resolution and DR compare to my Canon cameras(1Dx & 5Dmk III)
I want comment on the fact that CO doesn't support the Pef but I find ridiculous that they don't read the DNG from the camera!!!!!!
even more surprising is that if you remove from exif info the tag 645.... the file open.
doesn't look good but it works (I will try creating a color profile got it)
This is a real disappointment especially since Phase One made the so called "free to choose" their own motto for having an open platform !
Hope to hear more about that from the team
Thanks for listening

I've been a long time user of C1 when I was shooting Canon.
For 3 years now I shoot with a Pentax 645D and despite that C1 opened the DNGs I switched to LR, after a short while of changing habit and learn the sw, I'm more than happy with the result…
Stop blaming Phase, they just push their own MF products…0 -
Then they shouldn't say that CO supports general DNG 1.2
..a real shame ...especially when you consider how good v8 is!
Cheers0 -

Sorry but i can't... Its a 300$ software targeting the professional photographers...0 -
Just got an email from the Phase One team saying that they don't think the Pentax will be ever supported since is in competition with their IQ Digital Backs!
What a shame, what a disappointment from a company i have always respected for being so open minded
What am i support to do??
switching to Lightroom??
Cheers to all0 -

I would like to clarify our standpoint.
Some history:
Capture One is a program developed for Phase One Medium Format cameras.
Many years ago we saw that our software and image core was quite a bit better to anything out on the market for RAW processing and when we processed a 35mm file through our image core the result was far superior.
We implemented support for Canon 1D and 1Ds to see if anyone was interested to pay for a better software then what came with the camera. It was a success.
Before this point Capture One had been a free software for our Phase One camera back owners (still is with DB version) and only worked with "our" files.
The other medium format manufacturers where producing their own software.
Imacon had FlexColor
Sinar had CaptureShop
Kodak had DCS software
Leaf had Leaf Capture
None of them where adapted to 35mm users. This was an initiative we led.
Lets now fast forward to today.
Today we have support for more then 200 non-medium format cameras from a mix of manufacturers.
We also support a range of medium format cameras from "Team Phase One"
That includes Phase One, Mamiya and Leaf.
The other medium format manufacturers also have their own software:
Hasselblad has Phocus
Sinar has CaptureFlow
Leica has... nothing, but rely on Lightroom.
Pentax has a version of SilkyPix
Capture One is a part of the Phase One Medium Format solution for professional photographers.
Our camera customers have the added benefit of using complimentary 35mm and micro four third systems in the same software.0 -

Aren't all those software provided of free?
Today plenty of CO users don't own Medium Format camera just DSLR
and they do pay 300$ dollars for it
This is something the Team of Phase should really consider
Thanks

But Capture One DB is Free for Digital Back users, just as those softwares are free for their hardware users so I don't understand the comparison. And more to that point, Lightroom is not free for second hand Leica users.
The cost comes to Capture One users if you do not own our hardware, and those users can choose to use Capture One based on the features/support we can provide or not.0 -

What i am saying is that if you pay 300$ and you are basing your entire workflow on this software aimed for pro photographer you would expect the application to support a Professional DSLR0 -
And it does support many.
However, we do not support the Pentax and I would certainly not suggest anyone purchase a $300.00 piece of software in the hopes it will one day meet their specific requirement. Simply purchase a software that meets your requirements presently, not one that may in the future.0 -

How about if purchased years ago a 300$ + upgrades since it as always supported all the best pro Dslr camera in the market and finally when you buy a new pro one you find out that wouldn't receive support due strategic reasons....
don't you have the right to be disappointed?0 -
Disappointment is always your right. I am sorry but I can't change that at present.
… but in the wise words of Mick Jagger, "You can't always get what you want…"
I can only offer you the solutions discussed, Unsupported RAW to Adobe DNG to Capture One.
So again, as the wise frontman once said… "you get what you need".0 -
I am trying C1 v8 and I love it (all what i missed in v7 its now there!)
I am ready to abandon Aperture and jump over here but..
sadly i discovered while reading your forum that you won't support the Pentax 645 since its in competition with the Phase One Digital Backs
With all my respect i don't think this attitude will help to sell more Phase One DB ...and less Pentax 645
perhaps in my opinion less C1 licenses..
Today Capture One is probably one of the very best (or actually the best) pro raw converter in the market, with the ambition to compete against product such as Lightroom but this all story rise an important question:
"is it wise to commit to a pro software that won't support a camera just because of strategic marketing reason??"
I was burned from Apple/ Aperture... seeing this..i want do the same mistake again
Best to all

Hi Paul
I do share a similar opinion about the luck of support for the 645z
Unfortunately for the moment Phase One doesn't seem to consider to future support for this terrific pro DSLR
I have shared my frustration with Michael Reichmann (http://www.luminous-landscape.com) which is wonderful photographer and a very respected figure among the Phase One community
He was going to write to them... so for the moment I wont stop hoping...not yet 😭
In any case I do love Capture one and I do love the Pentax 645...
will I change workflow or change camera....? of course not!!
If you convert the Pef raw in to DNG via Adobe DNG converter you can use C1
Its not ideal... but its a solution
Hope for the best
Yours

Drew, I like the software. I use it and all... but you are a PR nightmare. "You can't always get what you want".... I dont know if it might get lost in translation but this is a sure way to piss off customers. Maybe culturally it might be ok in your country but let me assure you that even I, who are not part of this discussion as I dont have the 645z, am offended by your comments.

This thread has become un-constructive.
We have always been clear in this regard, since the very first Capture One software.
We do support a vast range of small and micro format cameras.
With medium format we only support our own "Team Phase One" * camera solutions.
We have never misled anyone in this regard.
We have never changed or revised this policy.
Nor should anyone expect it to change.
If you want to use Capture One in your medium format solution, then purchase a Phase One or Mamiya-Leaf solution.
This thread ends here.
Any new thread with the same topic will simply be deleted.
* "Team Phase One" includes: Phase One, Leaf and Mamiya.0
